When producers build rations for livestock or equines, their goal is to provide these animals with ideal nutrition. Forages are a key component of grazing-animal diets in Georgia, and accurately testing the nutritive value of your forage is important. The nutritive value of most forages in Georgia can be evaluated through near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), which is rapid, affordable, and accurate.
This resource from UGA Extension focuses on common questions that producers have about NIR.

With feeder cattle prices at historically high levels, many Georgia producers are asking the same question this summer: should calves be sold at weaning, or retained for another 30 to 90 days? There is no universal answer. When used strategically, it allows producers to make timely decisions that directly influence herd productivity and cost of production. For spring-calving herds in Georgia, pregnancy diagnosis is just around the corner.
In this article from Dr. Pedro Fontes, learn how planning now for how that information will be used allows producers to make more deliberate decisions regarding culling, nutrition, and feed resource allocation.
