There are approximately 4500 undergraduate degree-granting colleges in the United States. We have around 3000 four-year accredited colleges and 1500 two-year colleges. About 17 million students are enrolled in an undergraduate degree-granting program in the United States. I find it interesting that female students make up 56 % of undergraduate enrollment compared to 44% of slcmale students. If everything is equal I feel male students definitely have the advantage!

It’s no secret that gaining admission to the UC’s has proven to be more difficult, as admissions rates have dropped dramatically. As state funding for the University of California system has declined, campuses have plugged budget shortfalls by enrolling out-of-state and foreign students who pay more in tuition.

• UCLA admitted only 12% of its California applicants while admitting 22% of its out-of-state applicants.
• UC San Diego admitted only 26 % of its California applicants while admitting 51% of its out-of-state applicants.
• UC Santa Barbara admitted only 29% of its California applicants while admitting 47% of its out of state applicants.

Bold. Beautiful. Barnard.
Brilliant. Compassionate. Sensational. Siena.

Barnard College and Siena…when two things fit well together we can say, “they are a perfect match!"
I have never met a young girl as passionate and determined to help others as Siena Mills. At the age of 14, Siena began installing and growing community gardens on donated land in food deserts. Siena is singlehandedly running a successful 501(c)(3), Flourish Forever, that aims to address the lack of access to fresh food in underserved, urban communities. FLOURISH was started by Siena, as an outgrowth of her love for the environment and her passion for people. Siena grew up enjoying the privilege of fresh, wholesome food and has made it her mission to help others access and receive the benefits of healthy foods. Siena developed a nutrition curriculum and taught children at a mental health facility the importance of water, healthy food, and planting a garden as a resource for healthy eating. Siena envisions a world where more people eat healthy, nutritious foods and where food deserts are replaced with thriving community food gardens. Check out her website: http://www.flourish4ever.com/ Siena is planting seeds to help communities grow! Barnard is Blessed to have Siena!

“We feel extremely grateful to have had Susanne Condon, Coast 2 Coast College Counseling, as Siena’s college guidance counselor. You were generous with your time and made us feel like we were your only client. The advice and direction that you shared were grounded not simply on anecdotal evidence but more on empirical research and data. You were very organized and kept our daughter on track with deadlines, such that all of her applications were completed early, and submitted well in advance of any deadlines. From our first meeting, you were “straight” with us in terms of expectations and likely chances of acceptance into “reach” schools. You encouraged and motivated Siena through a very stressful process, to ensure that her authentic voice shined through in her essays and that her college applications were presented in the best light! Your approach has stood the test of time, having now achieved successful outcomes with our son who was admitted to Vanderbilt in 2012 and now a daughter admitted to Barnard College in 2019! And most important, your world-class service has been provided while upholding an uncompromising commitment to integrity and honesty. We have two more to go and look forward to engaging with you in the not too distant future!”

HUGE Congratulations to Jeffrey Zhang on his acceptance to the highly selective and prestigious Berkeley Haas Global Management Program. Jeffrey is one of 30 freshman students selected to participate in the program. Jeffrey has it all! Brilliant, musical, athletic, technical, and a savvy businessman. Most importantly Jeffrey is kind and humble. Jeffrey has been selling since he was a very young boy. At age 5, Jeffrey was setting up shop on the living room table finalizing prices when his aunts and uncles strolled to the front door. “Should bananas be two dollars or seventy-five cents?” As his eyes veered towards his cousin’s fancy new shoes and his aunt’s shiny new handbag, something told him that he could probably get away with the two dollars! Jeffrey’s parents thought it was crazy that their five-year-old son was selling their own groceries straight from the pantry, but his relatives recognized his entrepreneurial side at such a young age!
Growing up, Jeffrey dreamed about starting his own company someday. He became infatuated with streetwear, especially sneakers. One night before basketball season in eighth grade, he saw beautiful Nikes on the feet of Kevin Durant on ESPN and knew that he had to get them. On the day of their release, they were already sold out. Fast forward to today, Jeffrey runs a company where he sells sneakers online. Sneakers gave him an outlet to explore his passion for entrepreneurship. !

What are the Coalition, Common, and Universal College Applications?

These are examples of college application services that provide standardized applications which allow you to apply to multiple schools with a single application.

The Coalition Application is accepted by more than 90 institutions. The platform includes “The Locker,” a private space for you to collect and organize materials throughout high school that you might want to share with colleges and universities. Popular colleges using this application exclusively are the University of Washington and the University of Maryland.

The Common Application is a standardized application used by nearly 800 colleges. This is by far the most popular application form.

The Universal College Application is accepted by more than 30 colleges and universities. Most of my students do not use this application.

Congratulation Ben on being accepted into the prestigious Athletic Training program at The University of Texas at Austin. Participating in sports is Ben’s greatest passion, so this is truly a perfect fit! Ben loves the outdoors, and his favorite sports are rock climbing and Cross Fit. The BS in Athletic Training will prepare Ben for a career as an athletic trainer. Ben will be a health care professional that specializes in the prevention, assessment treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses to athletes and those engaged in physical activity. This major is highly competitive with an enrollment limit of 60 students. WOW…kudos to you, Ben!
