Dr. Shun Saito, associate professor of physics, was selected to represent Missouri S&T as an invited speaker at the 40th Anniversary Celebration of the University of Missouri South African Education Program (UMSAEP). Leveraging several UMSAEP awards, he has built a successful research partnership with Prof. Roy Maartens of the University of the Western Cape, fostering impactful scientific collaborations and contributing to the longstanding relationship between University of Missouri and South African institutions.

It's Nobel Prize Day!
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physics 2026 to Francis Halzen, University of Wisconsin–Madison, USA
“for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin."

We will have our traditional public lecture about the Physics Nobel Prize in January.

The Nobel Prize rewards science, humanism and peace efforts.

Dr. Hyunsoo Kim, assistant professor of physics, was featured in the Saint Louis Science Center's NewScience

for his contributions to STEM outreach. In collaboration with Matthew Dalton of S&T’s Makers Studio, Kim designed and built a Missouri S&T-branded magnetic track that demonstrates superconducting levitation, a macroscopic quantum phenomenon. The track was donated to the Science Center, where visitors can now experience superconductivity firsthand.

Thursday's speaker, Sandra Magnus, is a NASA astronaut and alumna of our physics department. And Thursday evening, we have an observatory event.

We are grateful to Kul and Charlotte Bhasin for their generous donation to upgrade the astronomy labs. We have acquired a new Heliostar 76 mm H-alpha Solar Telescope. The telescope allows us to observe the Sun's chromosphere, where prominences and solar flares originate above active sunspot regions. It uses a specialized filter that isolates a narrow wavelength range around the hydrogen-alpha line, revealing details of the Sun that are not visible in ordinary white light. The telescope can also be tuned to different H-alpha wavelengths to study the motion of the solar plasma. The telescope will be used in introductory astronomy labs as well as outreach events.

We're hosting a special observatory night on the occasion of "International Observe the Moon Night"- an event to celebrate lunar observation, science and exploration. It'll be this Monday from 9:30 to 11 pm. Feel free to join us and spend some time watching the post-Harvest Moon phase!
