The National Association of Educational Translators and Interpreters of Spoken Language (Naetisl) partnered with Missouri Developmental Disabilities Council (MODDC) for a 3-year grant opportunity to create what is now known as the largest repository of language access for special education resources in the nation! The website with this information is free to use, contains hundreds of special education terms in various languages, and even includes translated fact sheets/audio/videos about educational rights/laws/etc.

Thank you, MODDC and NAETISL for this meaningful work that will help families across Missouri who may have had limited resources in this area.

Service Spotlight: Speech-Language Therapy

One of the biggest myths we hear is:

"Let's wait until they're older."

The first three years of life are when the brain is making millions of connections that support communication, movement, play, feeding, learning, and independence.

Can my child have a learning disability even if they're smart?

Absolutely.

A learning disability doesn't reflect intelligence. It affects how the brain processes information, not a child's ability to learn.

Did you know?

Children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) may also have difficulty learning to read.

Why? Reading isn't just about recognizing letters. It also requires hearing, remembering, and manipulating speech sounds. When producing those sounds is difficult, developing these skills can take extra support.

Signs your child may benefit from additional reading support:
📚 Difficulty rhyming or identifying beginning sounds
📚 Trouble sounding out unfamiliar words
📚 Reading that develops more slowly than expected
📚 Challenges with spelling, even after repeated practice

The good news? Early intervention and collaboration between speech therapy and reading instruction can make a meaningful difference.

This sweet video popped on my newsfeed. Jack came over and took the phone from me. He was so happy to see this young man use his “talker” to do the announcements and say the pledge.

He watched it repeatedly, and it struck me how important inclusion is for children with disabilities to see each other being included.

Today, this young man inspired Jack and made him so happy. See his reaction in the comments.
