What is a provocation? 🌿

In a Reggio Emilia inspired classroom, a provocation is an invitation to wonder.

Each day, our teachers thoughtfully prepare open ended experiences that encourage children to explore materials, test ideas, ask questions, and create in their own way.

There is no single right answer and no expectation that every child will approach the experience the same way. The teacher creates the invitation, and the children help determine where the learning goes next.

As they build, sort, mix, arrange, experiment, and create, they are strengthening curiosity, problem solving, concentration, creativity, and confidence in their own ideas. ✨

Early literacy is not about teaching children to read before they are developmentally ready. It's about building the foundation that makes reading possible.

That foundation is built every day through language-rich conversations, intentional read-alouds, songs, rhymes, and small-group literacy instruction tailored to each child's level.

Phonemic awareness, the ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in words, is one of the strongest predictors of reading success. We develop it long before a child ever picks up a pencil, through play, music, and spoken language that makes the sounds of words something children notice and enjoy.

Discovery Time at Ivybrook is all about giving children new ways to see, create, move, listen, and wonder. 🎨

Recently, our Elm, Aspen, and Maple classes read Ready for Pumpkins, the story of a guinea pig patiently waiting for his garden to grow. That felt especially close to home for our students, since our own classroom guinea pigs, Tater Tot and Rigatoni, have a garden of their own. The children created pumpkin artwork inspired by the story to display around Tater Tot’s home.

Meanwhile, our Oak, Pine, and Kindergarten students have been exploring the work of Yayoi Kusama and beginning their own art inspired by her bold use of color, pattern, and repetition.

One of the things we love most about raising and educating children in Northwest Arkansas is having world class art and culture right in our own backyard. With several Kusama works nearby at , these lessons do not have to live only inside the classroom. While looking at photos of Narcissus Garden, one student immediately exclaimed, “I saw that on a bike ride with my dad!”

That is the kind of connection we love. A child learns about an artist at school, recognizes the work out in the world, and suddenly art becomes something they have a relationship with rather than something that only exists in a book.

Our students are now creating their own Kusama inspired pieces, and we cannot wait to share their finished installation. 💚🎨

Exploring big dreams in little shoes 💚

Career Week at Ivybrook was made extra special by the incredible families and members of our community who generously shared their time, resources, and talents with our students.

Throughout the week, our children had the opportunity to learn firsthand from a global communications media producer , a ballerina, a artist, a ice cream shop owner , and more. They asked questions, explored new ideas, and got a glimpse into all the different ways their interests and passions might grow with them.

We are so grateful to every family who helped bring Career Week to life. Experiences like these are such a meaningful reminder that some of the best learning happens when school and community come together.

One thing is for sure, our Ivybrook Owls have some very bright futures ahead. 💚

Our classroom doesn't end at the door.

Outdoor learning is a deliberate part of our curriculum, not a break from it. When children observe insects, test how water moves through soil, or notice the way light changes through the trees, they are doing real scientific inquiry.

Nature offers learning experiences that no classroom material can replicate: scale, unpredictability, sensory complexity, and the kind of open-ended investigation that builds genuine curiosity.

The outdoors is one of our most valuable teaching environments, and we use it with intention.

Meet the Bowman Family 💚

We are so excited to introduce the very first feature in our new series, The Families of Ivybrook.

It feels only fitting to begin with the Bowman family, one of our Founding Families and the VERY FIRST family to ever enroll at Ivybrook Pinnacle.

The Bowman family chose Ivybrook because they were looking for a place that felt like a second home. They loved the half day preschool schedule, the smaller environment, and the way Ivybrook creates space for children to explore, create, play, and grow in independence while still feeling known and nurtured.

For Vuk’s family, one of the most meaningful parts of their experience has been the relationships they have built along the way: “I love that the teachers really get to know Vuk, his personality, what motivates him, and all the little things that make him who he is. This being our third year, it really does feel like a second home.”

Vuk especially loves his teachers, his friends, and all the hands on experiences that let him discover something new, especially anything involving nature, experiments, building, and creativity.

Outside of school, the Bowman family loves adventure, traveling, being outside, trying new places, and cheering Vuk on in all of his activities. Helena is also the creator behind bringing her own creativity and entrepreneurial spirit to the NWA community.

When asked to describe Ivybrook, they chose these words: "Warm. Nurturing. Intentional. Creative. Truly child centered."

Bowman family, THANK YOU for believing in Ivybrook from the very beginning. We are so grateful you are such a special part of our story. 🦉💚

Week 6 at Ivybrook 🌿

By this point in the school year, something special begins to happen.

Children know their classrooms. They know the rhythms of the day. They begin choosing work with greater confidence, caring for their environment, collaborating with friends, and following their own curiosity a little further.

Throughout our classrooms this week, learning looked like observing closely, working with our hands, asking questions, creating, practicing, experimenting, and trying again.

Inspired by Montessori and Reggio Emilia, we believe children learn best when they are active participants in their own learning. Our teachers thoughtfully prepare the environment, introduce meaningful materials, listen closely to children’s ideas, and create space for those ideas to grow.

The result is more than a busy classroom. It is a community of capable, curious learners beginning to see themselves as researchers, problem solvers, artists, friends, and thinkers.

One of the most powerful tools an early childhood educator has is a well-placed question.

Not a question with one right answer. An open-ended question that invites a child to think, wonder, and investigate further.

At Ivybrook Academy, our educators are trained to resist the impulse to give answers and instead ask: What do you notice? What do you think would happen if? How might we find out?

This practice does more than build curiosity. It teaches children that their ideas have value, that investigation is worthwhile, and that not knowing something is the beginning of learning, not a reason to stop.

Research Spotlight! 🔎🐯

In a Reggio Emilia inspired classroom, learning often begins with a child’s question.

Recently, a student in our Oak classroom wondered, “Why do tigers have stripes?” That one question became the beginning of a much bigger investigation.

Over the past two weeks, the children have been researching tigers, studying their stripes, and discovering how camouflage helps animals hide, hunt, and survive. Their curiosity then moved beyond books and into hands on exploration as they created animals blending into their surroundings and experimented with making their own hands “disappear” against different colors and patterns.

What began with a tiger has now opened the door to even more questions about camouflage throughout the animal world.

This is the beauty of emergent learning. One child’s curiosity becomes a shared investigation, and the classroom grows right alongside their questions. 🌿✨

Gold Out at Ivybrook! ✨💛🎗️

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Each year, nearly 15,000 children and adolescents in the United States are diagnosed with cancer.

Wearing gold for a day may seem like a small gesture, but last week it opened the door to something much bigger. Families affected by childhood cancer shared their stories. Questions were asked. Conversations began. Support, compassion, and love could be felt throughout our school. Sometimes a simple act of participation tells someone, “We see you. We care. Your story matters.”

This September, wear gold, lead with kindness, listen to the stories around you, and support childhood cancer research in any way you can. 💛
