Dear Friends,
As the days grow hotter and the sun lingers overhead, it’s easy to think of late summer as something to endure. We seek shade, wait for cooler evenings, and quietly anticipate the changing of the seasons.
Yet nature tells another story.
By this point in the year, the seeds of spring have already taken root. What remains is not the work of beginning, but of maturing. The fruit hanging from the branch does not ripen in spite of the summer sun, it ripens because of it. The very heat that can feel relentless is also the force that draws sweetness, color, and fullness from what has been quietly growing all along.
Our inner lives often unfold in much the same way.
Carl Jung observed that transformation rarely arrives as a dramatic revelation. More often, it takes shape through the ordinary tensions of life, moments of uncertainty, disappointment, joy, sacrifice, and perseverance. Like the heat of summer, these experiences can feel uncomfortable, yet they may be the very conditions that deepen our character, broaden our compassion, and strengthen our capacity to live authentically.
The alchemists understood that fire was not merely destructive. It was the element of transformation. Through sustained heat, base materials were refined into something more whole. Jung recognized this as a powerful symbol for psychological growth. We are not simply changed by life’s intensity; we are matured through it.
As summer reaches its fullest expression, perhaps the invitation is not to rush toward the next season but to pause and reflect. What has been quietly ripening within you? What qualities have grown stronger? What old assumptions have softened? What new possibilities are beginning to reveal themselves?
Perhaps, beneath all the noise of daily life, something deeper has been at work all along.
Jungian psychology suggests that each of us carries an inner pattern of becoming, a unique calling that gradually unfolds throughout our lives. Some have called this guiding presence the daimon: an inner force that draws us toward meaning, purpose, and the fullest expression of who we are.
In an age increasingly shaped by algorithms, artificial intelligence, and endless streams of external information, learning to recognize that inner guidance may be more important than ever.
That question lies at the heart of our September program, Bargaining with the Daimon in the Age of AI (https://www.kcjung.org/events) , presented by David Strabala, MSW, MA, LCSW. Together we’ll explore how the daimon speaks through myth, imagination, and vocation, and how we might remain faithful to that inner voice amid the rapid changes of the technological age.
We hope you’ll join us on Friday, September 25 (https://www.kcjung.org/events) , for an evening of reflection, dialogue, and community as we continue exploring the timeless insights of Jungian psychology and their relevance to the world we inhabit today.
Until then, may these final weeks of summer offer not only warmth, but the quiet grace of ripening
Warmly,
Your Kansas City Friends of Jung
