Parenting through big emotions can be hard when you’re still figuring out what helps in the moment. 💛
A child may cry, yell, shut down, or struggle to respond when they become overwhelmed. At the same time, you may feel tense, frustrated, unsure, or rushed to make things better.
That can make the moment harder for both of you.
One helpful place to start is learning what regulation looks like for your child. Notice what tends to happen before they become overwhelmed. Pay attention to the sounds, demands, transitions, or changes that seem harder for them. Then look at what helps them settle, such as fewer words, more space, a familiar routine, movement, or a break. đź§
Your own response matters too. A calm voice, fewer directions, and giving your child time to process can make the situation easier to manage. These skills take practice, especially when emotions are already high.
Parents are learning these skills too. You do not need to have the perfect response every time. What helps most is having a few strategies you understand and can use consistently.
If home has been feeling overwhelming lately, message Childwise ABA. We can help you understand what your child may be communicating and give you practical ways to support regulation at home. đź’¬
