The SNCAE would like to congratulate Dr. Brewer on winning The Jefferson-Pilot Professorship Award! Yesterday evening, Dr. Patricia Brewer delivered her Jefferson-Pilot Professorship Lecture, entitled: “Transformative Teaching: The Who, What, Why and How Service-Learning Pedagogy Impacts Culturally Diverse Populations.” Her lecture explored experiential learning that most impacts students’ success. This award is the highest and most singular honor that can be bestowed upon a faculty member and is given in recognition of scholarship, teaching and community service.

Hello, Everyone!! We didn’t get to post last week because some wonderful future educators were off gaining wonderful knowledge! Kristina Wilson, Makaela Stokes and Megan Cobb attended the Student North Carolina Association of Educators Conference at NC A&T! First off, we met NC Teacher of the Year 2022, Leah Carper!! She rocks! She gave us her why and important skills to implement in our classroom! We ended on Friday night with why we want to be a teacher! On Saturday, we listened to the history of the SNCAE! Then, had breakout sessions! We had an opportunity to meet Xavier Adams, Beginning Teacher of the Year 2022!! He rocks as well! We attended a speech from him! The breakout sessions included: Understanding your first contract, Beginning Teacher Panel, and How to grow community within your classroom, and many more! Then, on Sunday, we attend Outreach to Teach! It’s a volunteer experience where we remodeled Rankin Elementary in Greensboro! Megan’s project included painting pencils for the Kindergarten playground fence! The whole play area was plain, but now has color! We also wrote thank you cards to the current teachers reminding them how much the rock!! This was definitely a good experience as a future educator! We learned so many things for the future students that we will be implementing! Thank you to Kristina Wilson for being a wonderful driver! Remember, Teaching Matters! 🍎

How long have you taught at Wesleyan?

Dr. Brewer has been teaching classes at Wesleyan for the past nineteen years!

What made you interested in education?

My mom was my first teacher, and I observed her impact on people’s lives as a community advocate and a pastor. Her church was small, but she was devoted, and she expanded her services beyond the church walls. Also, after I graduated from high school, there were federal programs that provided summer jobs for children from low income homes. I worked at Cherry Hospital, a mentally ill institution in Goldsboro, for three summers. My supervisor was the perfect mentor. She was well disciplined and interacted with all the medical and clinical stakeholders across North Carolina’s 100 counties that brought residents to the hospital. She was so passionate and valued every resident during the admission process.

How long have you been the advisor of the SNCAE?

Dr. Brewer has been the advisor of the SNCAE for the past fifteen years!
