Brazilian Jiu jitsu is the fourth subject. It’s the one where your kid learns what it feels like to be held down and figure a way out. Learns to lose on Monday and show up Tuesday. Learns that being scared and being helpless are two completely different things

Parents love to say “I don’t want my kid to be violent.” Cool. Nobody said violent. I said capable. Those aren’t the same word. Look it up, you can read.

The kid who trains is the least likely kid in the school to ever throw a punch. He already knows what a fight is. He does it three times a week with people better than him. There’s no mystery left in it. No ego to protect.

The kid who’s never been touched? He’s the one who freezes. Or he’s the one who swings wild because he’s terrified and has no other setting.

You’ve got your kid in a jersey, running drills for a sport he’ll quit at seventeen. Fine. Great. But he’s going to be a man for sixty years and he’s going to spend zero of them playing travel soccer.

Reading, writing, math, and the ability to protect the people you love.
