Who among us hasn't popped an Advil for a headache but did you know that certain pain killers can raise your risk of heart failure? A recent study out of the University of Milano-Biocca in Italy suggests that use of prescription strength NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) may increase one's risk of heart failure by as much as 20%. This statistic is based on an analysis of medical records of over 10 million patients. Although cause and effect are not yet obvious the correlation is such that it deserves a second look. Certain NSAIDS cause the body to retain sodium which impacts heart and kidney function. Although the study did not suggest that patients stop using pain killers it did urge us to use medications as directed.

Did you know that American dietary habits are changing? According to the National Library of Medicine, American Adults are eating more whole grains, nuts, fish and shellfish. We are also drinking fewer sugar sweetened drinks. A comprehensive study of the dietary habits of over 34,000 Adults found that we still fall short in our consumption of fruits and veggies. In addition we're still consuming way too many processed foods, as well as foods high in fat and salt. It is important to note that geography is a factor in healthy eating. In neighborhoods where fresh fruits and vegetables are available people eat them. Education matters as well. This study strongly indicates that higher levels of education enable people to make better, healthier choices. For further information:

Did you know that heat is being used to kill cancer cells? In local hyperthermia very high heat is applied to a small area of cells or a tumor. Energy sources include radio waves, microwaves and ultrasound waves. Regional hyperthermia involves lower levels of heat used on larger areas of the body. Applicators can be used on the surface of the body, some of the patients blood can be removed then heated and returned or chemotherapy drugs can be heated and pumped into the abdomen. Finally whole body hyperthermia is used to treat cancer which has spread. Blankets, warm water or a heated chamber are used to raise body temperature during chemotherapy treatments. Heat appears to help the chemo work more effectively. Heat therapy is currently used in only a few cancer centers in the US and is being studied in clinical trials. Did you know that dietary supplements are not always safe or effective? First of all the FDA puts dietary supplements in the food category so they do not receive the same scrutiny that a drug would before making it to market. Regarding marketing, as long as the manufacturer does not explicitly claim that the supplement cures an illness then they can pretty much say whatever they want. Let's look at type 2 diabetes, a common disorder of metabolism, as an example. The best tools for dealing with this condition are healthy diet, physical activity and blood glucose testing. The popular press has extolled the use of chromium, magnesium and even cinnamon to help control blood sugar. Chromium has been linked to kidney damage, magnesium with diarrhea and abdominal cramping and cinnamon while tasty has not been proven to do anything. Before taking any type of supplement be sure to discuss it with your doctor. At best you may be wasting your money but at worst you may actually be causing additional damage.
