What do you do if you have two canopies open at the same time?

There are differing opinions about the correct procedure, so keep that in mind as I give my perspective.

I believe we should be teaching all skydivers to cutaway two-out situations in most cases, assuming there is full inflation of the reserve, and no entanglement to prevent a proper canopy jettison. Yes, the RSL should be released if possible, especially with a double sided RSL, which would result in a main reserve entanglement if both sides remain connected. Prior to cutting the main away, it is nesessary to first split the canopies into a side-by-side. This is accomplished by pulling the rear riser of the back canopy if the parachutes are in a biplane. This can and has been done successfully many times, and is standard procedure for many military groups.

The procedure is, grab the cutaway handle, and then the left rear riser of the back canopy, verify that you are above 200 feet, than apply a few inches of input on the rear riser to split the canopies into a side-by-side with a little space between the canopies, and then cut away. If the main is the one that you are steering with, you need to remember to open your hand, but I think that is common sense. The input on the rear riser must be gentle to avoid spinning the canopy in question or stalling it. The unlikely risks of cutting away, in my opinion, are outweighed by the benefits of having a simpler situation with only one parachute, and time to unstow the toggles to maneuver and flare for landing.

I believe this because I have seen and heard of too many downplanes that went all the way to the ground. Even a low cutaway can and has resulted in serious injury. The likelihood of a biplane transitioning on its own into a downplane increases with turbulence, which inevitably increases as you get closer to the ground. This perspective may depart from previously held dogma, but I believe it is the safer option, given the repeated problems we have seen.

Old ways must give way to new ways when new evidence makes a better case for change. Fear of change cannot guide our actions. Clear thinking must be the source of our guidance, even if that means bucking the inertia of what we have done for many years. Let's make chopping normal. Let's teach people longer and more indepth so this can be done safetly. Let us place our faith in our students to take on more complex procedures, and in our ability to teach them well. It is the right thing to do.
