May horse club!! The final club of the year and we were all a bit sad to see it end. These kids have learned so much and had a blast along the way. Today we reviewed all of our stories from the year and ordered the stories on a timeline based on when they took place. Then Ms Mary asked review questions about horse facts as we chased hidden clues all around the farm. In the end the kids found a treasure of treat bags and water balloons! Everyone got a turn to ride on Sandy and ended our time with popsicles and water balloon fights! We also laid hands on our precious horse Streaker and prayed for God's healing since the kids haven't been able to ride him for a month now. We are seeing improvements and trust that God is not finished working. The faith of these sweet kids is inspiring to us!

April Horse Club! We discussed the Magic Tree House book "Stallion by Starlight" about Alexander the Great and his real life horse Bucephalus. Alexander was the only one who could ride Bucephalus because he observed him and figured out what he was afraid of. Then Alexander helped Bucephalus overcome his fear. Likewise we learned that one of Ms Mary's horses (Kit) is afraid of objects that blow in the wind. So we painted a bright banner filled with messages about trust and courage for Kit and waved it next to the round pen while Ms Mary taught Kit that the moving banner was nothing to fear. Also Mrs Brittany talked to us about trust, strength and endurance as we used weights to help us build our core muscles and become better riders. Finally we played horse memory match in the yard in teams using our walkie talkies. Such a fun day!!

March horse club! We discussed the historic novel, "Black Beauty'" written in the late 1800s addressing the issue of animal cruelty when horses were used increasingly for industry purposes. We learned a lot about what a horse might think and feel and what we can learn from their behavior. Our own Ms Aubrey taught the class how to draw and paint their own horse and then we got to observe Moon's behavior in the round pen as Ms Mary worked to teach her trust when working on new skills. We contrasted this kind of training with the harsh way horses were trained in the story.

February Horse Club! We discussed the auto biography and movie based on the life of Sonora Webster Carver, the famous blind horse diver from the 1930s. We discussed Sonora's amazing character, the incomparable trust she built with her horses, as well as her faith in God that inspired her to keep going after completely losing her vision. We watched photos and videos of the real Sonora, we made Popsicle stick puppet pages of horse divers, we tried riding with our eyes closed, and the amazingly gifted Brittany Hailes Bannon taught us through the art of Holy Yoga about the importance of posture and balance in riding, and the importance of walking by faith and not by sight. During free time the kids played spies with walkie talkies, solving the great mystery of the missing horse. This was one of my favorite months so far!

January Horse Club!! Discussed continued reading by Lincoln Steffens (A Boy on Horseback), made and decorated horse cookies, learned about tack and tested our new knowledge with a tack relay game. Finally we fed the horses, observed their behavior and labeled the parts of the horse. Can't wait til next month!

December Horse Club!! We discussed "The Miserable Merry Christmas," a true story about a boy who only wanted a pony for Christmas. We had hot chocolate, made ornaments and then went out to the muddy barn to experience what it would be like to have your own horse...scooping, manure, brushing out horses caked with mud. The kids were still all smiles and in the end everyone had a turn to ride on Sandy!
