What’s Cooking? Tomatillos!
They look a little like a green tomato wearing a tiny paper jacket, but tomatillos bring a flavor all their own!
Tomatillos are native to Mexico and are relatives of tomatoes. They have a firm texture and a bright, tart flavor that makes them great for much more than just salsa verde.
A few tomatillo tips:
• Look for firm, bright green tomatillos with dry, papery husks.
• Remove the husk and give them a good rinse before using.
• Try them in salsa, salads, dressings, omelets, and other recipes where you might normally reach for a tomato.
• Store them at room temperature for about a week or keep them in a paper bag in the refrigerator for longer storage.
• Have extras? Tomatillos can also be frozen, dried, or safely canned using a tested recipe.
And they pack in some nutrition, too! Tomatillos provide a variety of vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, C, E, and K, along with potassium, magnesium, and iron.
