Six weeks. $20,000. No pre-screening.

The 2026 Arnold Newman Prize is open for entries.

$20,000 unrestricted to the winner. $500 to each of three finalists. Every single submission gets in front of the jury, nobody gets cut before anyone looks. New this year: the Top Ten aren't just announced, they're published. A softcover book with essays on Newman's legacy, plus a limited hardcover edition going to festivals, museum libraries, and collectors.

Arnold Newman basically invented environmental portraiture: Stravinsky at his piano, Picasso, Georgia O'Keeffe, every U.S. president from Truman on. He also taught here every summer for over 30 years, and would sit with young photographers over meals and go through their portfolios with them. This prize comes out of that.

Entries open now through September 23.

Seven days. Paris Photo at the Grand Palais. A photobook barge on the Seine. And a finished project by Saturday.

The Paris Photobook Creative Retreat runs November 15 to 21, led by Sal Taylor Kydd and Anneli Skaar. Ten spots. You start at the world's largest photography fair, then spend the week in the boutiques, libraries, and flea markets that actually make a book: fine papers, ephemera, the tucked away shops nobody puts on a tourist map. Evenings are for cafés, wine, and reading each other's work in progress, the way Paris has always demanded of people making things.

This isn't a photography tour. It's a week built around finishing the book you've been circling for a year.

Go deep into how to achieve a film's look, with an Oscar winner.

Wynn Thomas just received an honorary Academy Award for a career that includes Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, Hidden Figures, A Beautiful Mind, and King Richard. He was the first African American production designer in film history. He's teaching one week on campus, September 28 to October 2.

This isn't a class about sets. It's about how a look gets built before a single frame is shot: the color logic, the references, the motifs that tell every department what the film is supposed to feel like. The case study: what if Stephen King's Misery was remade in Maine? You'll brainstorm the look, scout real locations, and build the plan.

This one's for every filmmaker, not just designers.

Each week, students come to Maine Media to focus deeply on their craft. They learn not only how to create images and stories, but also how to observe with intention, ask thoughtful questions, and communicate with clarity and care.

The impact of this work extends far beyond our campus. Stories created here move into publications, festivals, and communities. Shaping conversations and expanding perspectives.

Your book idea isn’t the problem. Your hook might be. 🪝

📖 There’s a difference between an interesting story and a marketable one and that gap is exactly what this workshop closes.

In one week with Allison K Williams, you’ll sharpen your concept, build your key scenes, and walk away knowing where your manuscript is going. High-concept fiction. Memoir-plus. Real structure. Real momentum.
