The people behind the headlines.

What does it take to photograph the people shaping the news, and to see beyond the public image?

On October 27, Maine Media faculty member and artist Sean Kernan sits down with Washington, D.C. portrait photographer Stephen Voss for a conversation about the skills, instincts, and perspective behind his portraits of the people at the center of the national news cycle.

Voss’s photographs have appeared alongside some of the biggest stories in American politics and culture. His work is held in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities Washingtonia Collection.

Dr. Rebecca Senf has spent years working at the intersection of photography, museums, collections, and scholarship. On December 4 and 11, she’ll lead Building the Curator–Fine Art Photographer Relationship, an online workshop exploring the relationship between photographers and the curators who help bring their work into the world.

For photographers, understanding that relationship can be just as important as making the photographs.

What does it look like to learn lighting from someone whose credits include Succession, Uncut Gems, The Departed, The Bourne Legacy, and The Royal Tenenbaums?

Ask the filmmakers who studied with Andy Day at Maine Media this summer.

Day is a Chief Lighting Technician and Gaffer whose career spans some of the most distinctive films and television of the past three decades. Fifteen students joined his Creative Lighting for Film & TV workshop, including current CCF students.

After the workshop, nonfiction cinematographer Luc Forsyth sat down with Day to talk about lighting, filmmaking, and the realities of working on major productions.

It’s a pretty good window into the caliber of professionals CCF students get to learn from.

What can happen when the same creative practice moves between books and film?

Maine Media MFA alum Maya Cameron ’24 has already taken her work in both directions.

Her book The Mermaid Princesses, published by HarperCollins and named Best Fantasy Children’s Book by the African-American Literary Awards, is now being adapted into an animated series.

Her directorial debut, What’chu Mixed With?, has also earned Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Actress at the Flores Film Festival.

Both projects were developed during her time in the Maine Media MFA.

From October 26–30, acclaimed filmmaker and archival producer Sierra Pettengill leads Documentary Master Class at Maine Media, a one-week workshop built around improving works-in-progress.
