It has been very windy on the North Shore of MA with no rain in sight. Just because your lawn is green it could be very thirsty because of the wind drying it out. Give it a long nice soak early in the morning and it will thank you.

GRUBS!!!!
It is very important to get your grub prevention down this month. Grubs will destroy your lawns if you don't do some preventative maintenance. Now is the time to put down product! Make sure it is a prevent, not a 24-hour killer. And make sure you water it in with at least 1/2 an inch of water as it needs to be taken up by the roots.

Getting ready to mow the lawn for the first time?? Here are a few tips....
1. lightly rake the yard to get up any sticks, dead debris and fluff up the grass.
2. Sharpen your mower blade so you have a nice sharp edge.
3. If you are planning to fertilize this year you should be putting down w**d prevention soon. If. you do the Scotts plan you are looking to put down step 1 this week or next. Make sure you follow the directions on the bag so you put down the product correctly. Most products should be watered in a 1/4 to half inch within 48 hours of putting them down.

Even though there is snow on the ground in New England it is time to start thinking of spring!!! If you don't want crabgrass this summer you must put down a pre-emergent in late April and then 45 days later.

Winter Lawn Tips: cut your grass short. 2.5 inches is great. This will keep the leaves from sticking and building up in the lawn and it will prevent the lawn from laying over on itself. Mulch up those leaves as well and get them off the lawn. They can smother the lawn if they build up in spots.

Water, water, water. Your lawn needs 1.5 inches of water a week. When you water, water deep and infrequent. Twice a week for an hour and a half is better than every day for 20 minutes.

Spring Tip #5- If you don't want crabgrass taking over your lawn this summer you need to prevent it before it grows. You will want to put down a crabgrass prevention product. I love prodiamine. I put down two applications of it. One the end of April and the second 45 days later. This will block crabgrass throughout the summer. You must water it in after you apply it and IF YOU PLAN TO SEED IN THE SPRING DON"T PUT THIS DOWN!

Here is where you can buy it. One bag will cover 15,000 square feet. Any questions let me know.

Tip #5- Spring cleanup. You want to start getting all the sticks and debris off your lawn to start the season. Give your lawn a light raking to get the grass to stand up a bit and to clean things up so you won't hit them with your mower and dull the blade. I would recommend doing this in early April.

Tip #4- Consistent mowing with a sharp blade. If you want your lawn to look amazing cut it every 4 days taking the top 1/3 of the grass off. You don't want to cut more than 1/3 of the blade of grass off as it causes the turf to stress. Also, make sure your blade is sharp. if you notice the tips of the blade turning white and yellow/brown a few days after you mow you need to sharpen your blade. Mulching is fantastic if you can do it as it will return the cut grass back to the soil and that cut grass has good nutrients in it for the soil to use.
