Today, our company dancers will audition for the role of Elizabeth in our Nativity, and the biblical connections surrounding her story are remarkable.
Mary, rejected by those who could not believe what God was doing, goes to her cousin Elizabeth, who was once barren and beyond the years of childbearing. Yet Mary discovers that God has also given Elizabeth a miraculous pregnancy. When Mary arrives, the baby in Elizabeth’s womb, John the Baptist, leaps for joy! In a beautiful mystery, a baby in the womb is the first to recognize that Mary is carrying the Savior.
And so, on this very day of our Elizabeth auditions, this verse from Psalm 113 came to our attention:
The LORD is high above all nations,
and his glory above the heavens!
Who is like the LORD our God,
who is seated on high,
who looks far down
on the heavens and the earth?
He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
to make them sit with princes,
with the princes of his people.
He gives the barren woman a home,
making her the joyous mother of children.
Praise the LORD!
Psalm 113 speaks of God who is exalted above the heavens yet intimately cares for the lowly. And specifically, it celebrates the God who gives the barren woman a home and makes her a joyful mother.
The connections to Mary’s Magnificat in Luke 1 are striking. Both Psalm 113 and the Magnificat are deeply rooted in Hannah’s prayer in 1 Samuel 2.
The themes are profound: God lifts the lowly, makes the impossible possible, brings life where there seems to be none, and carries His faithfulness from generation to generation.

The Nativity is not simply a story we perform. It is a story that invites us to look deeply into Scripture and consider the beautiful and profound things it reveals about God. ✨
