Couple of fun shots of the current WIP. Instagram isn’t anything near what it used to be in terms of reach and seeing what people want to see but I still like this platform.

Mmm stainless. The undercut is pretty critical and a little new to me so it was tricky to get it done. Usually something like this is lathe first then mill but its all mill for me. Initially I thought I’d need a lathe as a second machine but so much can be done on this -and I’m not racing to the bottom for lathe specific work- that I’m pretty sure it’ll be a long time before I get one, except a manual.

Doing small quantities means I’m often cutting feeds and speeds to about half of what I’d do if I had a large number, just because setup is such a large percentage of the job that whatever reduces the odds of having to modify the program and reupload it is worth doing, even if the cycle time is high.

Quick trick for clocking hole locations when you don’t have a multi axis or rotary big enough for the part.

Reliable within half a degree, not good for super precise parts but for set screws good enough

More turned parts on a mill 🤷🏼‍♂️

Old video from a job a long while back. Was answering a question some guy had on a forum that reminded me of this job.

Subject was machining corners with a radius only slightly bigger than the endmill- I had almost screwed myself on this job by keeping the same feed all the way around internal radii, measured the flats (good!) and almost pulled it. Checked the corners and found they had way more material left by the tool whipping around the corner than I had thought. Pretty sure I fixed either by slowing it down or using a smaller finishing tool

Tapping the ends of these on the mill, 300+ pcs with short cycle times. They all screw together into one long rod. Not sure exactly what for - concrete or turf I believe - but they gonna go in one way and not come back out 😬

Made a plug to support this part from getting crushed during the second operation. Made the plug slightly on the small side so it fits snugly with a bit of scotch tape to keep from marring the finish. Easy peasy

“Fabricate per sample” jobs are always so fun. What were the original dimensions? Why on earth did they originally try to repair it that way? Why would they put standard threads on a metric bolt pattern? Is it even metric? We may never know.

In this case, the bolt pattern on the top is not evenly spaced- pretty sure when the bolts sheared off in the first set, they just drilled and tapped a second set in between. If that’s not the case then I get to spend a lot of fun time doing trig to figure out the right spacing.
