“Brewing Images: An Introduction to Film Soup”

ABOUT THIS 1-SESSION CLASS:
In this 90-minute mini-workshop, you’ll get an introduction to “film soup” — an alternative film process where chance, chemistry, and material intervention become active collaborators in the photographic process.

Drawing from her own artistic practice, Daura explores film soup as an experimental analogue process in which everyday ingredients and organic materials transform the film, producing unexpected colors, textures, and distortions while embracing unpredictability, imperfection, and the expressive potential of analogue photography.

Designed for photographers, artists, and curious beginners alike, the workshop invites participants to rethink the photographic negative as a mutable, expressive surface.

ABOUT THE CLASS
If words can paint a picture, and a picture is worth a thousand words, what happens when we combine the two? This course invites you to explore the relationship between image, text, and meaning. Each week we’ll explore a different approach to combining photography and text — from adding words to images as a way to describe, inform, or illustrate a subject, to creating or expanding personal and political narratives.

We’ll discuss and draw inspiration from the work of photographers who combine image and text in distinct ways and we’ll experiment with how the type of language, typography, and writing style we employ impacts the meaning and message of our own work. This course is for anyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of the role and potential of text within photographic practice or seeks inspiration and support in developing a personal style or project.

ABOUT THE TALK
A painter in her early career, Margaret Morton (1948-2020) was a professor of art at Cooper Union in New York City for thirty years, but is now best known for photographing and chronicling New York City’s unhoused communities for nearly two decades — a project she began when she was in her 40s and which yielded four books.

Her main projects included photographing the lives of people living in an abandoned train tunnel; the structures built by people living in Tompkins Square Park (across the street from her apartment); and people living underneath the Manhattan Bridge.

She also documented the squatter movement on New York’s Lower East Side (Loisaida) in the 1990s with one focus on life in Glass House, an abandoned glass factory at the corner of Avenue D and East 10th Street.

BONNIE YOCHELSON is an independent curator and art historian specializing in New York photography. She and Morton met in 1989 when Yochelson was Curator of Prints and Photographs at the Museum of the City of New York and became friends. In 2002, Morton asked her to be the executor of her estate in order to properly preserve her work. Yochelson, now also the executive director of the Margaret Morton Archive, will present a biographical sketch and critical assessment of Morton’s life and work. Bonnie Yochelson

NEW PHOTO HISTORY CLASS:
“20th Century European Photography: A Survey of Transnational Trends”
with Dortje Fink, starting Wednesday, Sept. 16 live on Zoom.

About the class:
European photography in the 20th century doesn’t have one single history, but rather a whole spectrum of histories. To give you an overview of the key developments in photography in that time and place, we’ll present case studies of four important artistic movements that you might not be familiar with: New Vision, Humanism, Photoconceptualism, and Post-Cold War Photography.

We’ll examine the work of individual photographers from different eras and regions who were part of a larger network in photography in their time — among them Lucia Moholy, Eva Besnyő, Robert Doisneau, Zofia Rydet, Seiichi Furuya, Luigi Ghirri, Sophie Calle, Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Joan Fontcuberta, and Viviane Sassen. Through lecture, discussion, and assignments, you’ll broaden your understanding of the various conditions under which photographs were taken and the endless possibilities of creatively engaging with photography. This course is for photographers and general art audiences alike, whether you want to be inspired to try new directions in your own work, or simply leave with an expanded knowledge and understanding of the field.

ABOUT DORTJE FINK:
Dortje Fink is an art and photography historian, educator, cultural organizer and podcaster based in Berlin. With academic training at Humboldt University in Berlin and Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, her research interests involve photographic archives, exhibition histories, lens-based media art, visual culture, biases of canonization, and decentering the history of photography.

ABOUT THE CLASS:
“Landscape” can mean different things, depending on where and who you are: one might first think of a natural environment, but it could just as likely be an urban, suburban, exurban, or rural space. In this class you’ll consider new ways of looking at and understanding your environment through photography, and possibly incorporating collage and the moving image. Weekly assignments will be based on nature/human interaction, forces effecting the landscape, the body in landscape, and historical meanings of a site, and will lead you into developing your own geography-based project.

ABOUT THE TALK
In this intimate conversation, photographer Jon McCormack presented “Elements of Wonder”, a photographic project that explores the hidden architectures, patterns, and elemental forces of the natural world. Moving from ice, stone, water, light, atmosphere, and living systems, McCormack’s images invite viewers to look more slowly, to recognize beauty as a form of attention, and to consider wonder not as escape, but as a way back into relationship with the Earth.

Following the presentation, Jon was joined by Pamela Chen Pamela Chen 芃安 for a discussion on how a photographic body of work can become more than a collection of images. Together they talked about the process of shaping a project into a book and an exhibition, and their conversation looked at the project’s sequencing, editing, narrative structure and audience experience.

Jon’s book “Patterns: Art of the Natural World” was recently published by Damiani.
