ABOUT CHRISTINA’S WORK:
Christina’s practice explores the possibilities of photography and the ways in which an image can shift, distort and challenge our perception of reality. A recurring interest in her work is the creation of dream-like images that exist somewhere between the familiar and the imagined. Her photographs invite the viewer to wander through them and form their own interpretation of what they are seeing. By manipulating and reimagining reality, Christina explores how photography can reveal hidden or alternative truths that may already exist within the world around us.

ABOUT THIS 1-SESSION CLASS:
Every artist develops their own method or practice of how they create work. In this Mini-workshop, we’ll look at three different photographers (Eugène Atget, Robert Frank, and Diane Arbus) and try to understand how, with their individual photographic practices, they managed to change the course of photography.

The poet Stéphane Mallarmé described the approach to painting of Édouard Manet — who broke free from the conventions of academic painting — as akin to throwing yourself into the water to learn to swim: when Manet would begin a painting, he’d plunge headlong into it, not knowing in advance exactly how it will be painted, but discovering how to paint it through the act of painting itself. So follow along, hurl yourself into the water, and learn to swim!

ABOUT THE CLASS:
In this prompt-driven class, we’ll study what makes the images of exceptional photographers “exceptional,” by analyzing their use of light, framing, distance, and what they leave unsaid. Each week we’ll examine the work of a significant photographer in depth, dissecting the formal decisions that give their images their particular power and presence, and we’ll engage with these images from the perspective of the poetry of the everyday, the landscape as witness, photography’s relationship to time, and more.

ABOUT KATHERINE AKEY:
Katherine Akey is a San Francisco-based artist and public historian whose work explores themes of tenderness, love, and memory. Her practice spans photography, fiber arts, sound, video, and creative writing, with an emphasis on materiality and storytelling. She engages with archives, objects, and personal histories to create multilayered narratives that explore the passage of experience from lived to remembered, memorialized, and forgotten. She holds an MFA from the International Center of Photography (ICP) and is currently Acting Director of the Harvey Milk Photo Center in San Francisco.
