Earlier this year, Apprenticeshop program director Caitlin Sackville took a tour of the Rocking The Boat campus in the Bronx. It was rewarding to share and explore the similarities and differences between the two programs.

Over five days in late September, a group of apprentices and staff explored Penobscott Bay during our Fall Expedition. They traveled 65 nautical miles in our open boat, Pollux, built here at the Apprenticeshop in 2009. Averaging 13 nm per day, they stopped overnight, anchoring or going ashore where permitted, at Calderwood, Buckle, Pond, and Monroe Islands.

Apprenticeshop has two annual expeditions, one in the fall and one in the spring, for apprentices in our 9 month and 2 year programs. Some apprentices who are just starting their time with us may have never spent this much time on a boat, nevermind sleeping onboard under the stars. It proves to be a rewarding crash course both in seamanship and getting to know your peers. It’s been a beloved tradition at the AShop for years.

Many of the islands visited during expeditions are on the Maine Island Trail and made available for public enjoyment thanks to Maine Island Trail Association !
