Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership

Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership We integrate scientific research and education on a Maine coastal island.

Established in 2009, the Hurricane Island Center for Science & Leadership delivers STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) experiential education programs lasting 5-12 days for youth ages 11- 18. Our mission is to integrate science education, applied research, and leadership development through year-round educational programs and a seasonal environmentally-sustainable island community

. We inspire individuals to become impassioned change leaders and informed citizens in confronting current and future environmental challenges. Our research agenda focuses on answering local high priority questions and increasing scientific capacity regionally. We pursue initiatives that increase our knowledge through the scientific process, and the knowledge gained then informs communities and empowers people to take action. In 2012, we ran our first 6 programs delivering 550 program days, and in 2022 we delivered nearly 5,500 participant days of education working with 43 schools and organizations.

Warm weather brings warm faces 🌞

Three high school interns from the Brooks School l made their way through the Hurricane Island community early this summer, lending a helping hand and an excited spirit. the Brooks School has a professional summer internship program: Students on the Forefront. It opens doors for rising seniors to explore career paths through direct experience.

On Hurricane Island, Alder, Kevin, and Phoebe dipped their toes into the ocean of marine science and sustainability work. The three ambitious students rotated through nearly every corner of Hurricane Island’s operation. They tended to the garden, worked with the facilities team, helped the galley, and visited the aquaculture farm with the research team.

They found that spending time on Hurricane Island was an unforgettable experience, and we felt the same about having them immersed in our community. Recently, Hurricane Island’s first-ever graduating class of pre-apprentices presented what they’ve learned on the island to staff and parents on Zoom. For two weeks, the pre-apprentices shadowed various teams here on Hurricane to learn a bit about what it takes to keep our island running. From maintaining our gardens and facilities to helping cook meals, they were an incredible help for their time with us, and their success makes us optimistic about the future of our pre-apprenticeship program.

A few weeks ago, our high school program Ocean Lab - Surrounded by Science had an unforgettable week on Hurricane Island.

This program focused on intertidal habitats and their biodiversity. Throughout the week, students explored various topics such as the endangered right whale, seaweed distribution, and invasive crab species, thinking critically about the scientific methods they use and learning how to identify bias in research.

Not only did these students learn countless new things, but they also spent the week making new memories and friends surrounded by the magic of the island.
