✨As we get closer to our Golden Gala celebrating our 50th anniversary season, we would like to share glimpses at our past students and performances! This photo is from 1982. The piece being performed was Christmas Waltz and was choreographed by RDC in 1977, three years after we were founded. The original ballet, accompanied by an original score by Alex Korkolis, was performed at Maddox Theater each December from 1977 to 1981. Keep an eye out for more RDC history!

Maria Tallchief, the first Native American to become a prima ballerina, was one of the most acclaimed ballerinas of the 20th century. Born on this day in 1925, Tallchief grew up on the Osage Reservation in Oklahoma. As noted in a NY Times tribute to her, "Growing up at a time when many American dancers adopted Russian stage names, Ms. Tallchief, proud of her Indian heritage, refused to do so, even though friends told her that it would be easy to transform Tallchief into Tallchieva."
Tallchief kept her name and made her mark throughout the dance world, dancing with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo from 1942 to 1947 and the New York City Ballet from its founding in 1947 through 1965. She is pictured here in the title role of George Balanchine's ballet "Firebird." This dance legend passed away in 2013 at the age of 88.
To introduce this pioneering dancer to children, we highly recommend the picture book "Tallchief: American's Prima Ballerina" for ages 5 to 9 (https://www.amightygirl.com/tallchief-america-s-prima...), the chapter book "She Persisted: Maria Tallchief" for ages 6 to 9 (https://www.amightygirl.com/she-persisted-tallchief), and the illustrated biography "Who Is Maria Tallchief" for ages 8 to 12 (https://www.amightygirl.com/who-is-maria-tallchief)

RDC will be closed today as we remember and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Did you know that MLK day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service? We encourage our wonderful students and families to go out and do something positive in our community today! MLK Day is intended to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems, and move us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community". Here's to embodying MLK Day everyday! 🖤

Rockford Dance Company has the best dance instructor’s in town! Don’t miss Meghan & Caitlyn Baylor perform this Friday @ Ars Pvblica | The Muse.

ARS PVBLICA | The Muse

🔥👀 Caitlyn and Meghan Baylor return to Ars Pvblica!

Caitlyn Baylor and Meghan Baylor are involved with the Rockford dance community as dancers, teachers, and choreographers. They often collaborate with each other as independent dance artists with a focus on choreography that is site-specific, or off a proscenium stage. Their most recent site-specific collaborations have included choreography for Alma: A Psychedelic Awakening at Mainfraim in 2020 and the creation of an evening-length site work at Severson Dells Nature Center, Dance at the Dells from 2019-2021. In 2021, Meghan and Caitlyn were awarded a RAAC Rockford Area Arts Council award im the category of “placemaking” for their site work at Seversom Dells. This year they co-choreographed for Somnium: the Book of Water Myths and Legends alongside a collective of five dance artists, and earlier this year, they co-choreographed and shared original work titled All Will Come Again at Rockford Art Museum which explored themes of navigating complex medical diagnoses and the shortcomings of the body as embodied, dancing beings.

The Baylors will be performing their response to the theme, “Ars Pvblica | The Muse.”
