Learn more about RU’s Sociology degree in this week’s edition of Major Mondays!

The discipline of sociology explores the nature, structure, and dynamics of social life. Students who study sociology will gain a better understanding of social issues that are especially affected by relations among groups, paying close attention to the interplay of such factors as class, race, ethnicity, sex/gender, religious belief, and national identity. The field of sociology looks at how society is organized, where power lies, what beliefs influence our behavior, and how societies have evolved over time. The study of sociology teaches students how to think about individuals, groups, institutions, communities, and societies and how to use the scientific method to ask and answer social research questions using data. Sociology helps students develop their skills in written and oral communication, critical and quantitative thinking, and research and design methods.

Sociology majors go on to pursue careers in fields as diverse as business, public administration, social and community services, social research, law, and education.

Learn more about RU’s Psychology degree in this week’s edition of Major Mondays!

Psychology is the study of the human mind and behavior. If you’re interested in how human beings operate, a psychology degree can grant you key insights into these questions. You’ll learn what motivates human behavior by developing your critical thinking and problem-solving skills through a multi-faceted approach to learning. Through this psychology degree, you’ll amplify your ability to conduct rigorous research, help others, and also manage people. So, the principles of psychology have applications in a variety of fields.

Most employers value the skills that are developed through studying psychology. These skills include the ability to offer analytical insights, skilled reasoning, and effective communication. Even if you choose not to pursue a career as a practicing psychologist, employers will always be interested in employees with these skill sets. For instance, many people with psychology degrees find successful careers in healthcare, human resources, management, or marketing.

Students in the Psychology Department develop an understanding of human thought and behavior through active learning. Our interdisciplinary approach, grounded in science, research and reflection, encourages self-exploration and engagement with the community. This challenging course of study empowers students to develop to their fullest potential socially, emotionally and intellectually.

Learn more about RU’s English degree in this week’s edition of Major Mondays!

The English degree offers students many ways to meet the challenges of Rockford University’s mission and vision. Our courses help students discover the practical value of critical inquiry and intensive textual analysis, consider how different cultural perspectives contribute to distinct ways of viewing the world, and appreciate connections among literary traditions and liberal arts disciplines. Moreover, we envision our majors building on the sense of global awareness they acquire through their course work as they engage with the world outside academia.

Both our major curriculum and the required rhetoric sequence offer strategies for reading, critical thinking, and communication that provide students with a strong foundation for achieving professional success, finding individual fulfillment, and developing a sense of civic responsibility while earning their English degree. We encourage our students to take their study seriously, but to view their work with language and literature as a source of joy that will continue to sustain them long after they have graduated with an English degree from Rockford University.

The English degree continues to rank among the premier majors for graduate programs in law, medicine, business administration, international relations, library science, and education. Professional writers can pursue careers, often as freelancers, in media relations, publicity, marketing, communications, and publishing, to name a few. The analytical and communication skills that all majors in English acquire provide career flexibility, which is crucial in an age that necessitates adaptability to rapid changes in the workplace.
