As I was reviewing some past family documents this morning, I recalled something I don't think I ever mentioned during these two campaigns: I'm not the first generation of my family to take an interest in school governance or run in a local election!

My grandfather was School Board President in my home town in the late 1960s, and my dad was a Village Councilman in the same town in the late 1980s, until we moved out to the farm next door to Grandpa in 1992. During his terms of service on the school board, he was an active dairy farmer, as well as a school bus driver, meaning that a day could have had him up before 4AM to milk the cows before his morning bus route, then after his afternoon bus route and another round of milking, he would get cleaned up to go to a school board meeting.

By the time I was old enough to remember, he was retired from both the school board and from milking cows, and by the time I was in high school, the district he once served had fallen on some hard times full of tight budgets and conflicted relations.

Today in Rockford, I see the risk for our district to suffer a similar decline in quality and reputation. Rockford is still an excellent district with many accomplishments to be proud of, but unhealthy governance habits have begun to undermine the trust of the community. Parents and voters who do not have confidence in the board's management don't enroll their children, and voters do not approve additional revenue sources at the ballot box when they don't trust they will be used responsibly. Without that per-pupil funding and tax revenue, innovative opportunities are harder to provide, and conflict between parties in the district rises.

Keep watching for further analysis of how a few course corrections now can preserve Rockford as an excellent and impressive district, and avoid the landmines that threaten the excellence of the district.

Missing your sign? It has been reported by several candidates that sign theft seems to have made a return this election cycle. In order to get out ahead of some of the common speculation, I'll add the following details:

*The signs were not removed by city/township authorities or the county road commission, because those entities have been contacted to verify, and similarly-situated signs on neighboring properties were left in place.
*The thefts do seem to be ideologically targeted, because missing signs shared common races and positions, while opposite signs nearby were unaffected.

If you have a sign go missing, please let me, or the person who placed it for you, know so that we can get you another and see how widespread the problem is. If you have cameras and get footage of a sign theft, please pass it along or contact law enforcement.

I have the next batch of signs on order (with a special limited edition feature), so watch for a post next week to request a sign if you don't yet have one! If you have last election's sign still hanging around, feel free to get it out and display!

Looking forward to another great season! Percussion students have been in clinics since February. Winds have been practicing all summer, and a week of pre-camp wraps up today. Our road crew team has cleared out the semi trailers and deconstructed last year's props. I've already been ordering parts and performing repairs, and next week is band camp, including teaching students how to safely and securely load the instruments onto the semi. Before long, Friday night pre-game, halftime, and Saturday competitions will be in full swing.

My second student is now an upperclassman, and my oldest is an instructor in a neighboring district. I'm preparing my next two to start in the next two years, and the youngest two are dreaming of when it's finally their turn to get involved in this great activity!

[[BUMP IN THE NIGHT]]

When the lights go out... the closet door slowly creaks open. 👀🌙

Strange sounds echo through the room. Shadows begin to move. Monsters emerge from the darkness, and fear takes over.

But sometimes the things we fear most aren't scary at all.

What begins as a night of terror soon transforms into something else. 💚✨💙

The Rockford Bands are proud to introduce their 2026 production: “Bump in the Night.”

Step into the shadows, listen closely, and discover what lurks beyond the closet door… 👀

Even though the school board vote isn't until the general election in November, don't forget to vote in the primary by August 4th. Early in-person voting is in progress now. I just finished casting my vote at Courtland Township Hall.

It's meeting night. Made it just in time. Real time thoughts below in the comments.

This post demonstrates so many of the things that make Rockford a great school. They are big factors in why I have students there. They are also why I want to participate in shoring up the areas that place this great legacy at risk by neglecting the concerns that have led many resident families to select other educational options. I am convinced that my experience with education across all sectors and levels could bring fresh ideas that would lead to Rockford increasing its competitive position in the educational marketplace and help identify blind spots in the board majority's public sector dominated worldview that lead many families to conclude against trusting the district with their students.

Glad to see the matrix of evaluation scores given by the sitting board has been made public by the district.

What do you see, and what did you think of the process?

I detect a few patterns as I analyze how particular applicants were rated across the evaluators, as well as how particular evaluators handled ratings across candidates. Some of the patterns show a greater degree of objectivity than I expected, where other patterns show far less than I expected.

If you'd like to see the 85 pages of application materials from all 16 candidates that fit between these two screenshots, they can be downloaded at https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rockfordschools.org%2Fdownloads%2Fboe%2F2026-files%2Fboe_vacancy_packet.pdf%3Ffbclid%3DIwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHuJRpw5Gqny7vaklKjGGB4czUfe0MYfDeTainaZ9yNYltRYrNOz-HiCVWKfz_aem_Q1n81sJ2WbpSAZ6jQjBwBg&h=AUDMTtS0yCwSgXKK2lHvsgHfx62pwalSeisXuOrjJYV4lJFYOyBuXPYjbr0CFe25z6zPybqkte8GCPRR2X1MhQWTe5n-j09mS_y6NTgLg_7Omor0Aj5pDnfAcVDwZ0grl6PXTfzlaGKM9Pg&__tn__=H-R&c[0]=AUCgcXiIpFfhffylXtZtFQbDpdm1iREYTR3B8CBmxNCqKP8Pk4YWfOzUL9CSlJtoV7zf7FeCm2PojxXlqJiL_jzT8a88GL-USxtpt5zX0ES_T1FpEaOvEU9ahNpOgE2iRcbh8zPdA6dP3vIIm9TtB3TjHOig43Lv68CLtdqVlLGAl_ENgyHAVJQkgaeyjvF7ApE

If you live anywhere other than Plainfield Township, do you still have your yard sign from 2024?

I have about 50 signs in storage from last election, and I will be ordering more as we get closer to the time of the election, but if you still have one, especially if you live along a well-traveled road, I'd encourage you to go ahead and get it out today!

If you live in Plainfield Township, we'll look forward to seeing yours after Labor Day weekend!
