Have a Happy Fall Break to our families and community

Photos from RK Welsh Elementary School's post 11/17/2023

As we head into fall break, we wanted to give a Bulldog shout out to our wonderful Welsh clinical students from Rockford University and Northern Illinois University. This group of college students are using their love of children, applying their knowledge from course work, and gaining treasured experience in running a classroom and meeting a class of students’ needs from their cooperating teachers. They’re here throughout the week giving their best. We want to congratulate them as they complete their semester, thank them for their hard work and dedication, and invite them back to apply to teach at Welsh Elementary upon graduation!

Mr. Cameron, Ms. St. Angel, and Mrs. Erwin make up our Specials Team at Welsh. Mrs. Erwin and Ms. St. Angel teach our students the love of the arts by introducing them to the various genres, artists, and histories of their study. Ms. St. Angel beautifies the school with her students’ masterpieces, while Mrs. Erwin fills the school with music and inspires the smiles and tears of parents and grandparents at the annual primary Welsh Holiday Concert. Mr. Cameron teaches students the importance of physical fitness and movement. He inspires a love of sport and strengthens our Bulldogs’ teamwork skills. Mrs. Knaack, our head librarian supports our belief that literacy is a civil right by organizing and purchasing texts for our school library. Ms. Ballard organizes the shelves, reads stories, and keeps the “books” on all of our library’s titles. She also is the glue that holds this school together. Her work and service to the staff, students, and families of Welsh has spanned decades. Her silent efforts have improved the lives of more than is possible to count. Thank you to our Specialists for all they do for our Welsh family.

Our very own Mr. Reuter completed the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC this past weekend. Let's give Mr. Reuter a big Bulldog shout-out for his dedication to our country through his years of service in the Marine Corps. We're so proud of his continued service teaching our 4th graders and his hard work and grit in training and completing this amazing 26.2 mile race!

Mrs. Hampl, Mr. Jones, and Mr. Lash make up our 5th Grade Team. The 5th grade experience is one of transformation. In 5th grade, we end our elementary experience and begin our movement into middle school. Our 5th Grade Team instills the necessary confidence and responsibility required for success at West Middle School. They foster their students’ grit in undertaking the complexities of higher-level academic work while enhancing their responsibilities of being positive role models for the younger students. Our 5th graders transition from us as representatives of Welsh in the community. They are the ambassadors to all of our combined efforts through their words and actions. Our 5th Grade Team embraces their craft as that of the “finishers” of our Bulldogs. Our 5th graders wings have dropped, strengthened, and upon the end of the year, will be ready to fly away. The Welsh 5th Grade Team steadies them up as they prepare to take flight and leave our nest.

We’d like to extend a special thanks to our community partner, The Rockford Park District, for their generosity in providing additional swings for our school playground, and their work with the Rockford Rotary Club to provide our neighborhood with a beautiful pollinator garden on the grounds of the former Huffman Park Playground. The kids have enjoyed RPD Board of Commissioners member, neighbor, and Welsh alum, Tyler Smith, for his time and effort in making Welsh a place where they belong!

Mr. Reuter, Mrs. Sweeney, and Mr. Shanks make up our 4th Grade Team. Each of them brings a variety of experiences and specialties that assist our 4th graders with their new positions as members of the “Second Floor.” Being on the second floor at Welsh means that you have the responsibility of living up to schoolwide expectations and to be positive role models for our younger students. It’s a tall task, but with the guidance of our 4th Grade Team, our Bulldogs meet that challenge. As our 4th graders enter into double-digits in their years, they also develop the necessary higher level thinking skills to problem solve, draw conclusions, and support their answers with evidence from the text. They learn to communicate their learning with the written word and the spoken word. Though in the distance, their eyes begin to catch the glimmer of middle school on the horizon. With a gentle yet firm hand, our 4th Grade Team passes them the necessary tools to carry on their journey.

A major shout-out to our Welsh Bulldog soccer team! They showed real grit and determination this year. A special THANK YOU to Coach Haney and Coach Cole for all of their hard work as well. You all made us so proud 🐾⚽️

Mrs. Lai, Mr. Bouril, Mrs. Gray and Ms. Rodriguez make up our talented 3rd Grade Team. Each, bring a multitude of personal and professional skill points that allow our students to cross the bridge from the primary grades into upper-elementary. As a team, they hold their students hands as they enter into their classrooms each August, yet as the year progresses they equip their students with the academic, social, and emotional confidence necessary to be successful. Third grade is the intersection of the elementary experience, and our 3rd Grade Team embraces the responsibility of scaffolding our Bulldogs first steps on their journey towards independence. At the year’s completion, after being guided by our K, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grade Teams, our 3rd graders are prepared to rise up to the second floor for 4th and 5th grade at Welsh. Our 3rd Grade Team both solidifies our Bulldogs’ primary experience while pulling them into the upper-elementary ranks. Their job is complex, but our 3rd Grade Team is up to the task!

Introducing Mrs. Fictum, Ms. Haney, and Ms. Seibert! Our Welsh Second Grade Team brings multiple years of experience and skill to help develop our second graders and prepare them for the transition into the upper-elementary. Their expertise in solidifying the skills of decoding and encoding is something to behold. Our second graders begin their year writing groups of sentences and end publishing informative, persuasive, and narrative pieces. Be it differentiating the three different states of matter, explaining the life cycle in their animal project, or presenting the interesting facts about a famous person, our second-grade teachers develop their students’ wonder about the world around them. This requires a classroom leader with both a firm resolve and a loving embrace. This necessary combination is not in short supply with our 2nd Grade Team. Our second graders and their families know they belong here. This team instills that truth with their words and proves that belief through their actions each and every day.

Our Welsh First Grade Team brings multiple years of experience and positions within RPS. It’s that breadth of experience that makes the Welsh first grade experience an all-encompassing journey. Our First Grade Team enriches their students’ capabilities to ensure their future success. The transformation from beginning to end is a sight to behold. Our First Graders are nurtured by their teachers, and in turn, they nurture both plants and baby chicks as they learn the different life cycles of flora and fauna. Be it enriching their numerical awareness in the base-10 system, progression through the structures of decoding English language, or solidifying their writing skills from sentence to paragraph, our Welsh First Grade Team is the head of its class.

We’d like to take this opportunity to introduce our Welsh Kindergarten Team. Team members Ms. Common, Mr. Ortiz, and Ms. Wright have been establishing the academic and social foundations of our Bulldogs for many years. The amount of growth that students make in Kindergarten exceeds any other grade level. Each day our Kindergarten Team is teaching our students the foundational skills necessary to grow into active readers, writers, and mathematicians. The social skills learned in Kindergarten set the foundation for our students’ careers as students, and the lessons learned prepare our students for positive interactions with others for a lifetime. Let’s give a huge Bulldog Shoutout for our Welsh Kindergarten Team!
