The Alabama Junior Cattlemen’s Association will be hosting two Fall Youth Field Days this September! Both field days will focus on cattle reproduction and genetics and are FREE to attend, with lunch provided at both events. To help accommodate travel distances, one field day will be offered in North Alabama and one in South Alabama.

September 9: South Alabama Field Day at JYJ Red Angus in Columbia, AL

Plant Southern peas in full sun, where they will receive six to eight hours of sunlight each day. Space plants 4 to 6 inches apart in garden rows, or grow one plant in a 5- to 7-gallon container. Plant from April through July after the danger of frost has passed, and harvest in approximately 60 to 70 days when the pods are fully developed. Harvest time may vary by variety.

Black bears are making a comeback in Alabama, with established populations in southwest and northeast portions of the state. As bear populations grow and expand into new areas, Alabamians may be more likely to encounter them near homes, neighborhoods, and wooded areas.

Most black bears avoid people, but food and strong scents can draw them into residential areas. Help prevent conflicts by securing trash, bringing pet food and bowls indoors, cleaning grills, removing bird feeders during active bear season, and picking up fallen fruit.

During a bear encounter, remain calm, do not run, keep your distance, and slowly back away. If a bear approaches, stand your ground, make yourself look larger, and use loud noises to encourage it to leave.

What can you plant in the garden in August? More than you might think!
As summer crops begin to wind down, it is time to start preparing for fall gardening. Beans, broccoli, cabbage, collards, kale, lettuce, radishes, turnips, and other vegetables can still be planted, depending on your location in Alabama. Your lawn and landscape also need attention this month, especially when it comes to watering and monitoring for insects and diseases.

The Great Southeast Pollinator Census returns to Alabama Aug. 21 and 22. This two-day event gives anyone the opportunity to become a citizen scientist and observe, count and celebrate pollinators. This is an enriching activity that people can do in just 15 minutes, either alone or with others.

Bethany O’Rear, an Alabama Extension home horticulture agent at Auburn University, said by being involved, everyone can learn a lot and enjoy the little things in nature.

“Participants will get as much from the census as the researchers do, if not more,” O’Rear said. “This is especially true if this is someone’s first time participating.”

Alabama Extension is known for providing education and outreach to the people of Alabama through its offices in all 67 counties. Now, thanks to an expanded partnership with Simply Southern TV, Alabama Extension is also reaching audiences weekly as they tune into the show from the comfort of their homes.

Every episode of the 30-minute show now includes a full segment focused on Alabama Extension programs and educational efforts, covering topics in agriculture, forestry and natural resources, human sciences, 4-H, and urban programs. New episodes for the second half of season 12 began airing in July.
