Reminder to students: FAFSA
Volunteers Needed for Personal Training Internship Fall 2017!

Are you looking for help getting into shape this Fall? The Department of Fitness, Wellness and Sport is in need of volunteers for a fall internship in personal training that will run for approximately 12 weeks. Our students need someone who can commit to a three day, eight-week personal training session beginning with three weeks of preliminary meetings. After the three week preliminary meetings, the eight-week training program will begin around September 12th and will go through November 22nd. The total commitment will be 12 weeks with the internship concluding with a formal presentation to the College on the week of November 28th. Note: there is a small margin around which these dates can be adjusted but here is the approximate schedule:
• Week of Sept 12: “Meet and greet” / Goal Setting
• Week of Sept 19: Fitness testing/assessments
• Week of Sept 26: Walkthrough of the personalized exercise prescription
• October 3rd – November 22nd: 8-week training program
• Week of Nov 28th: Culminating Student presentation
The volunteers need to be committed to helping our students attain their goals of completing the 150-hour internship and completion of our Personal Training Certificate program. If interested, please contact Katie Travis to discuss training session times, as we will have to match schedules to determine workable training hours. Times will most likely be early morning between 7:30-8:30 am or after the work day. There may be room for afternoon slots is schedules permit.

Volunteers MUST make every effort to attend all training sessions. There is very little time available for breaks in the training (i.e. vacations, business trips, etc.). Please do not volunteer unless you can commit to being there for the training sessions, as there are no makeup days. Those who have volunteered in the past are welcome to volunteer again.

To volunteer please contact Katie Travis at extension 3814 or [email protected].

COVID testing site has been moved from the WTC to the ERC! Also, please note that effective immediately, masks must be worn when indoors on campus, including when you are in class. This action is in line with the recent recommendations of the CDC, the Illinois Department of Public Health, the Illinois Board of Higher Education, and the Illinois Community College Board. Let’s do all we can to keep campus open! Thank you for your cooperation, kindness, and understanding.

Starting Monday August 16th, the Rock Valley College COVID-19 testing site will be moved to a new location on campus. The site will be moving from the Woodward Technology Center lobby to the old cafe located in the Educational Resource Center.

Appointments that were already scheduled will be unaffected by this change.

The testing site is open for all Rock Valley College students and employees for free. This test only takes a few minutes and results are typically received same day. For more information on the testing site and how to sign up for your free COVID-19 test please visit:

Opinion | Community College Is the Smart Choice 07/18/2021

“Labor-market data show a two-year associate’s degree from a community college delivers a significant boost in lifetime income to students. After two years, students who want to earn a bachelor’s degree can simply transfer to a traditional four-year college or university, where they’ll go to class alongside the students who paid full price for four years.”

Opinion | Community College Is the Smart Choice It’s a bargain at twice the price, and the stigma is misplaced.

Congratulations, Professor Gilbert! We are so lucky to have you on our faculty!

On May 13, 2021, Theresa Paulette Gilbert, Professor of Composition and Literature, received the Racial Justice Award as part of the 2021 YWCA Women of Achievement Awards!

This award is so well deserved. Mrs. Gilbert is a tireless and fearless advocate for racial justice. The college would be hard-pressed to find a single equity and social justice initiative on campus with which Mrs. Gilbert was not directly or indirectly connected. Since she arrived at RVC in 1991, she has taught, pursued, planned, fought, mentored, advocated, and challenged. If you are fortunate enough to know Mrs. Gilbert, you know this is simply who she is. It's in her DNA.

This award comes from the YWCA and acknowledges the intersection of her racial justice work with her feminism and advocacy on behalf of women. Our college and our community will forever be marked by Paulette's work on behalf of women, people of color, and all disadvantaged folks. We congratulate her and thank her for all she has done and continues to do.

Free children dental cleanings are now being offered for ages 5-12 years of age from the Dental Hygiene program. The dental hygiene clinic is located in the HSC building on the main campus. There are limited appointments available. Please call (815) 921-3235 for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Happy RVC Graduation Day!

Today's Commencement Ceremony will be live streaming on our Youtube page from 1pm to 5pm and our Virtual Commencement Ceremony will be premiering at 6pm.

Congratulations, Marina!

We are excited to introduce you all to this year's Student Commencement Speaker, Marina Klein!

Marina is a Running Start student from Harlem High School. She is graduating this year with both her Associate in Science from RVC and high school diploma from Harlem High School. She was nominated as a good candidate for her “outstanding achievement, bright personality, and ambitious attitude”.

Marina is the Recording Officer in Phi Theta Kappa. Additionally, she was recently honored as one of Rock Valley College’s nominees to the All-Illinois Academic Team and was the winner of RVC’s Gustafson Prize in Mathematics.

When asked about her time at RVC, Marina says, “It’s been so much fun! Many thanks to my professors, each whose influence plays an integral role in who I am as a student today and continues to inspire me.”

Outside of school, Marina enjoys playing French horn with the Rockford Symphony Youth Orchestra and spending her weekends trying out new veggie recipes.

In August, Marina will be attending Rice University and majoring in Mathematics.

Congratulations to Marina and the entire class of 2021!

Way to go, Ashley and Kayla! We are proud to have you as students and soon, as RVC alumni!

Ashley and Kayla are in their final year at RVC before transferring to NIU. They just dropped off tons of donations they collected for a Management Leadership class project! They had so many goodies for us and they got to learn about what we do here!

We love working with students and we can make it as immersive as you like. We often have big cleaning and organizing projects to take in, so if your school or group is interested in helping, please message the page! We are happy to set up tours for groups, too!

I fee like you have to see this place to understand the chaos and beauty and magic and pain and healing that exists here ❤️

Thanks for being awesome, Ashley and Kayla! Sorry you’re blurry. I didn’t realize it was in portrait mode!

We are so very excited to be able to offer STEM camps this summer at Rock Valley! Please check out the two courses being offered to all ages (if a bit young to work with small tools and glue guns - we ask for a parent to attend).

Also...share as much as you can!

Forensics Camp - we will cover how to analyze the different parts of a crime scene including blood typing, blood spatter, footprint/fingerprint/handwriting analysis, skeletal identification, microscope analysis of fivers and hair, chemical tests and more. On the last day, the students will use these skills to determine what happened at a simulated crime scene.

Space Camp - we will be not only learning more about planets, space atmosphere, and constellations but students will make lots if take home projects like various rockets with launcher, constellation projector, space sand and more.
