Happy First Friday in December! And you know what that means... we are excited to bring you another Friday Facebook Feature on an RMED student! Today we'd like to introduce you to Kelli Utz, originally from Effingham, IL. Read on to learn more about the path and her passion for rural communities that led her to become an RMED student!

1. What year are you in the RMED Program?
Fourth and final year, YAYYY!

2. What is your undergraduate degree in and which college did you attend?
I attended Lake Land Community College, obtaining my associate's degree in pre-medicine. I then transferred to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where I completed my bachelor's degree in molecular and cellular biology.

3. What did you want to be when you were growing up? Are you majoring in it now, or are you following a different path?
Since I was really young, maybe even starting in kindergarten I always said I wanted to be a lawyer, however, after shadowing a lawyer in my hometown I decided that path wasn't for me. Instead, I started to find interest in the medical field. Throughout high school, I was able to participate in a Health Occupations course where we were able to earn our CNA license. I continued to work in the medical field as a pharmacy technician and scribe and loved all aspects of it, eventually landing on the end goal of medical school.

4. Why did you choose to focus on rural medicine?
After spending the past 28 years of my life in a rural community, this is an area of interest that I am extremely passionate about. It is an opportunity to serve a medically underserved population who face a lot of barriers when it comes to getting the care they deserve. I ultimately love the idea of being able to return to my own community and serve them after completing my Med/Peds residency.

5. What has been something you have found to be an unexpected, yet pleasant surprise during your RMED experience?
The faculty truly treat you like one of their own which is exactly what I needed coming from a smaller community. They are always willing to go the extra mile to ensure you achieve your goals.

6. Are you involved in any extracurricular activities? If so, which ones? How have they added to your experience as an RMED student?
Absolutely! I have been involved in many different groups and activities throughout medical school including the rural medicine interest group and curriculum board, AHEC scholars, child and adolescent psychiatry interest group, leaders to leaders and pediatric interest group. These experiences have helped me improve upon my leadership skills as well as open up many different opportunities for me throughout medical school.

7. What advice would you give to students applying to medical school? How would you encourage them to consider rural health?
I would tell anyone applying to medical school to GO for it and don't let anything stand in the way of your end goal of being accepted. There are many different paths to travel down before ending up in medical school and all of those are great! Rural health is a great way to become involved in underserved communities and as a bonus, all the people are so welcoming.

8. While in your medical studies, what is something you have had to learn to do differently?
One important thing I have learned to do differently throughout my medical studies is to allow for more "me time". After studying for my first board exam, I learned how important it was to have quality study time over quantity. There is no reason to feel guilty for not having your head in a book at all times, in fact, it might actually serve you better.

9. What hobbies/interests do you have outside of school?
I am a pretty boring person, honestly my hobbies/interests include hanging out with my friends, family, boyfriend and our dog Stanley when at all possible.

10. Is there anything else you’d like to share about yourself or your RMED experience?
My experience as an RMED student has been absolutely wonderful! If you are from a smaller community or looking to go into rural medicine and you are thinking of going to medical school this program is exactly what you are looking for. There are so many opportunities to experience all aspects of care and allows you to network in these communities throughout medical school.

Kelli, we are so glad you decided to choose the RMED program to follow your dreams of working with the underserved in a rural community! Please check back next Friday for yet another fantastic feature on an RMED student. Have a great weekend!
