When we first opened the Sweetwater Literacy Center last year, it was really just an idea born out of the reality of a real literacy problem in our community, there were significant reading deficits affecting our kids. We saw a unique opportunity to work with parents, teachers, and our children to work towards a stronger, healthier, more literate Rock Springs. Seeing where we are today, I can tell you that our volunteers are the absolute heart and soul of this place, and none of this is possible without your hard work and dedication to our community.

Every single week, these folks show up and give their time, patience, and heart. They’re sitting down with K-12 kids to help them work through reading challenges, and they're even helping adult learners understand a brand-new language in our ESL program. Watching a student's face light up when a concept finally clicks...there's just nothing like it.

To every single one of our volunteers, THANK YOU. You took a vision to help our community and turned it into something real. You are literally changing lives, one reader at a time.

Cuando inauguramos el Sweetwater Literacy Center el año pasado, todo comenzó simplemente como una idea surgida de la realidad: nuestra comunidad enfrentaba un problema serio de alfabetización y nuestros niños sufrían importantes deficiencias en lectura. Vimos una oportunidad única de colaborar con padres, maestros y niños para construir una Rock Springs más fuerte, más sana y con mejores niveles de alfabetización. Al ver dónde estamos hoy, puedo afirmar que nuestros voluntarios son el corazón y el alma de este lugar; nada de esto sería posible sin su arduo trabajo y su dedicación a la comunidad.

Semana tras semana, estas personas acuden para brindar su tiempo, paciencia y entrega. Se sientan con estudiantes de todos los niveles escolares para ayudarles a superar dificultades de lectura e incluso ayudan a adultos a comprender un idioma nuevo a través de nuestro programa de ESL (inglés como segundo idioma). Ver cómo se ilumina el rostro de un estudiante cuando por fin comprende un concepto... sencillamente, no tiene comparación.

A cada uno de nuestros voluntarios: GRACIAS. Tomaron la visión de ayudar a nuestra comunidad y la convirtieron en una realidad. Literalmente están cambiando vidas, un lector a la vez.

We provide explicit dyslexia and reading instruction with the support of dedicated volunteer tutors, helping struggling and neurodivergent readers build core skills. All of our academic support and programs are provided 100% free of charge.

How it works: Schedule Ahead: To ensure a driver is available, please call or text us the day before you need a ride. Coverage: Available for residents within the Rock Springs or Green River area. Safe & Supportive: We are here to help you succeed, every step of the way.

Between summer travel, camp adventures, and busy schedules, our book club calendar took a little summer breather, but with fall coming in the not-too-distant future, we are ready to turn the page and get back into a reading routine!

Whether you’ve been with us from the start or have been wanting to join, this is the perfect time to attend. The Book club meets at the Sweetwater Literacy Center every other Saturday at 1:00 p.m., with the next meeting happening August 1st. We will be finishing up the discussion of ‘The Silence of the Girls’ by Pat Barker and picking our next book!

Dyslexia Support Services at the Sweetwater Literacy Center

Everyone's path to literacy looks different and this is why we provide a broad range of literacy support instruction including Dyslexia support services.

Research tells us that 1 in 5 students have dyslexic traits, and these bright minds require a specific, Structured Literacy approach to unlock their full potential. Heather, our certified dyslexia instructor, brings specialized training and a passion for helping neurodivergent learners navigate the world of reading and writing.

The Sweetwater Literacy Center offers,

•Specialized Guidance: Heather will be lending her expertise to help tailor our services to the unique needs of dyslexic learners.

•Evidence-Based Approaches: Our programs are rooted in the Science of Reading, a collection of 50 years of evidence based research for literacy and dyslexia support.

•Empowering Families: We are here to help parents move from frustration to success by designing a curriculum for your child and providing a clear path forward.

Now that the dust has settled from Friday’s "Building Bridges to Literacy" graduation, we awake Monday morning to the realization that we have all survived summer camp!! Just kidding, it was amazing and we are very grateful we were able to work with all these wonderful, growing minds. However, we could have never done this on our own and we want to take a moment to look back and say thank you to everyone who made this summer camp possible.

As they say, it takes a village and it really is true! Because of your belief in our mission, our K-6 students spent 4 weeks breaking down barriers to literacy, completing science experiments and engaging in scientific investigation, building up their confidence, and proving that they can achieve anything.

Ahora que se han calmado los ánimos tras la ceremonia de graduación del viernes del programa "Building Bridges to Literacy" (Construyendo puentes hacia la alfabetización), nos despertamos este lunes dándonos cuenta de que... ¡todos hemos sobrevivido al campamento de verano! Es broma: fue una experiencia maravillosa y estamos muy agradecidos de haber podido trabajar con todas estas mentes brillantes y en pleno desarrollo. Sin embargo, nunca habríamos logrado esto por nuestra cuenta; por eso, queremos tomarnos un momento para mirar atrás y dar las gracias a todos los que hicieron posible este campamento de verano.

Como suele decirse, "hace falta toda una comunidad", ¡y es totalmente cierto! Gracias a que creyeron en nuestra misión, nuestros alumnos de los grados K-6 pasaron cuatro semanas derribando barreras en el aprendizaje de la lectoescritura, realizando experimentos y participando en investigaciones científicas, fortaleciendo su confianza y demostrando que son capaces de lograr cualquier cosa.

The Sweetwater Literacy Center is growing faster than we imagined and the coming school year is already bringing many new students. While we are thrilled that so many families are seeking help, we currently have a waiting list of students ready to learn, but we are in need of additional volunteers!!

Perhaps that can be you! The best way to predict a child's future is by giving the gift of literacy.

You don’t need to be a professional teacher to make a difference. If you have a love for reading and a heart for our community, we will provide the training you need to help a student move from "frustrated" to "fluent."

Training and instruction materials are provided, you don't need a teaching background but a passion for literacy and helping children is required.

Flexible Scheduling, we work around your availability.

Be the Bridge, help us ensure that every child in Rock Springs is given the tools to read and write.

¡Atención familias! Este martes 21 de Julio, nuestra Hora del Cuento en Español será una aventura muy especial. Si el clima nos acompaña, nos reuniremos al aire libre bajo el árbol para leer un libro juntos. ¡Después, nos divertiremos en grande con juegos como el avioncito (hopscotch), saltar la cuerda, dibujar con gises, burbujas y tal vez hasta globos de agua!

Nota importante: Todo depende del clima de Rock Springs. Si el día no está de nuestro lado, ¡no se preocupen! Trasladaremos toda la diversión y los juegos al interior del centro. ¡De cualquier forma, la pasaremos increíble!

Attention families! This Tuesday, July 21st, our Spanish Language Story Time is turning into a very special adventure. Weather permitting, we are going to read a book outside by the tree together. Afterward, we will jump right into some awesome games; hopscotch, jump rope, drawing with sidewalk chalk, bubbles, and maybe even some water balloons!

However, we are keeping an eye on our Rock Springs weather, last time our plans were foiled by rain...fingers crossed. If the elements aren't on our side, don't worry! We will bring all the games and activities inside the center. Either way, the fun is guaranteed!
