Wednesday, September 30th is Orange Shirt Day. This day originates from the experience of a 6 year old little girl named Phyllis Webstad from the Secwepemc Nation when she was FORCED from her home and taken to the Saint Joseph Mission Residential School. Her grandmother had saved money to buy Phyllis a beautiful orange, shiny shirt. She was so excited to go to school and to wear her beautiful new orange shirt. When she arrived at the mission, they stripped her of her clothing, including her orange shirt. She never wore it again. This experience and the color orange has always reminded Phyllis of how her feelings didn’t matter, how no one cared, and how she felt like she was worth nothing. Please join us on Wednesday, September 30th in remembering those little children whose innocent lives were taken and never made it back home to their families and for the survivors who are haunted by these horrific injustices by wearing an orange shirt in their remembrance and to remember that “Every Child Matters” 🧡
