Hochstein School serves as a community center for Greater Rochester. Each member of the Hochstein population has access to our 100-seat Hilda D.

Dedicated to providing access to opportunity, Hochstein is a community of musicians, dancers, and supporters who come together in this historic and inspiring place to develop the ability to speak and communicate through the making of music and dance. Located in the heart of the city, Hochstein offers a place to work and collaborate with colleagues, students and audiences. Taylor Recital Hall and our 857-seat elegantly renovated Performance Hall, in which recitals and performances are regular occurrences.

Miles Davis Animated brings the music of Miles Davis’ groundbreaking 1950s–60s era to life with a creative twist: animated visuals, expressive tap dance, and a powerhouse ensemble of performers. Audiences will be visually transported by larger-than-life cartoon illustrations from Dave Chisholm’s acclaimed graphic novel Miles Davis and the Search for the Sound. These evocative visuals, paired with bold musical improvisation and kinetic tap rhythms, create a multi-sensory experience that honors Miles’ artistry while reinventing it for new generations. Classic works from Miles Davis’ legendary catalog are interpreted by a stellar ensemble including trumpeter and cartoonist Dave Chisholm, pianist Greg Woodsbie, saxophonist Colin Gordon, bassist David Arenius, and drummer Aaron Staebell. Tap dancers Cheryl Johnson and Laurie Coles will animate the music with percussive rhythm and emotional nuance, transforming the stage into a living, breathing soundscape. Celebrating Our 2026 Service Award Honorees

2026 Faculty Service Awards — Dr. Dave Chisholm & Dr. Yi-Wen Chang

Hochstein is proud to recognize Dr. Dave Chisholm and Dr. Yi-Wen Chang with the 2026 Faculty Service Awards for their outstanding contributions to our school community.

Since 2013, Dave has led Hochstein’s Creativity Lab, inspiring students through innovative offerings in music, art, rock, and graphic storytelling. An accomplished jazz trumpeter, educator, and award-winning graphic novelist, Dave brings exceptional creativity and energy to everything he does at Hochstein.

A member of the piano faculty since 2012, Yi-Wen has distinguished herself as both an exceptional teacher and performer. As a Piano Department Co-Chair, she has supported countless students through lessons, performances, competitions, and collaborative projects, helping musicians of all ages and levels grow and thrive.

2026 Margaret Dunlay Volunteer Service Award — Angela Beckley

Hochstein is also honored to recognize Angela Beckley with the 2026 Margaret Dunlay Volunteer Service Award. What began years ago as a Hochstein parent and Saturday work-study volunteer has grown into a lasting commitment to our school. Angela continues to warmly welcome and support hundreds of students each week, embodying the generosity, dedication, and community spirit at the heart of the Hochstein mission.
