We are honored that our scholars were able to educate others about Harriet Tubman and Hester Jeffrey.
Last night we were thrilled to host a students from the Cheryl Speranza Leadership Institute. The performed an imagined conversation between Harriet Tubman and Hester Jeffrey in honor of Harriet Tubman’s 200th birthday. The Erie Canal was an integral part of the Underground Railroad.
The Cheryl Speranza Leadership Institute is proud to announce that two scholars, Binita Koirala and Josephine Noel are Harvard-Radcliffe Club Essay winners.
As the Rochester alumni club of Harvard University, the group invites all area students in grades 9-12 to demonstrate their writing skill and creative ideas in an annual essay contest. Students can take any position, argue any point, and espouse any cause in relation to a yearly theme. This year's was Do We Have Nothing to Fear But Fear Itself? The judges look for fresh perspectives, well-reasoned arguments, and excellent verbal skills.
First Place was awarded to Binita Koirala while Josephine tied with another students for Third Place. All winners will receive a monetary award along with their recognition.

Today marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. This year’s theme - ESPERANZA: A CELEBRATION OF HISPANIC HERITAGE AND HOPE - invites us to celebrate Hispanic Heritage and to reflect on how great our tomorrow can be if we hold onto our resilience and hope. It encourages us to reflect on all of the contributions Hispanics have made in the past, and will continue to make in the future. It is also a reminder that we are stronger together.
