The University of Rochester is making a bold $8.5 million investment in four new transdisciplinary research centers, marking a first-of-its-kind commitment to solving complex global challenges through deeply collaborative research. Three of these centers are co-led by distinguished Hajim School of Engineering faculty.

🎼 SoundSpace
SoundSpace combines music, engineering, and science to explore the future of sound technology, immersive performance, and media innovation, in collaboration with the Eastman School of Music.

💻 EXTRRA (Extended Reality Research and Application)
A team effort led by faculty across optics, computing, neuroscience, and education, EXTRRA is building next-gen XR platforms for learning, accessibility, and workforce training.

🌠 CCQS (Center for Coherence and Quantum Science)
CCQS will push the frontiers of quantum technologies and light-matter interaction with real-world applications in optics and photonics.

This is a huge step for the University and an exciting moment for research innovation at Rochester!

ASTRID MULLER RECEIVES UR VENTURES TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT FUND AWARD
Assistant Professor Astrid Muller and her student adjust mirrors on an optical bench.

Assistant Professor Astrid Müller from the Department of Chemical Engineering is one of three researchers receiving funding through the Technology Development Fund (TDF) this year. The TDF was conceived as a tool to provide targeted funding that de-risks University-developed technologies and advances them toward commercialization.

Astrid has been awarded funding to advance development of her electrocatalytic technology that removes fluorinated “Forever Chemicals” from drinking water. Her approach significantly lowers the cost of PFAS removal, works in water, and uses only nonprecious materials as anodes to in-situ generate active PFAS destruction catalysts.

Read more about Astrid’s project and the other awardees on the UR Ventures website.
