Big news for science! 🔬 The University has received National Science Foundation (NSF) funding to advance the NSF OPAL project into its final design phase — bringing us another major step closer to construction.

Once built at our Laboratory for Laser Energetics, the facility will hold the world's most powerful laser system, giving researchers around the globe advanced tools to explore quantum electrodynamics, recreate conditions from the early universe, and power the most powerful electron accelerator on Earth. NSF OPAL will help reestablish US leadership in ultrahigh-intensity laser science and drive breakthroughs in national security, fusion energy, semiconductor manufacturing, and medicine.

New is reshaping how scientists think about targeting inflammation to fight aging.

URochester biologists found that removing the protein cGAS—long blamed for triggering inflammation—actually increased inflammation and frailty and shortened lifespan, revealing that the protein also plays a protective role by keeping age-related "jumping genes" switched off.

The findings suggest future therapies will need to preserve this protective function while blocking cGAS's inflammatory side—a more precise path toward treating age-related disease.

Students cheered on their fellow URochester Yellowjackets at the Blue & Gold tailgate and the first football game of the season vs. Case Western Reserve University!

It was also the start of our Spirit Fridays - a new unofficial URochester tradition for students, faculty, and staff to sport our blue & gold together every Friday.
