This month, our counselor, Mr. Yang, does townhall style presentations to teach students what bullying is and how to stop it.

The state of MN has a very specific definition of bullying. It goes beyond "someone is being mean to me".

These criteria are how MN statute 121S.031 defines it: Power imbalance and repetition - means actual or perceived imbalance between victim and student and behavior repeats and forms a pattern. OR The conduct substantially interferes with a student's educational opportunities, performance, ability to participate in school.

We document these cases formally. They are rare to meet requirements. We do not tolerate kids picking on one another, being mean on purpose, and making others feel bad. We notify parents in these cases and partner with them to help things settle.

You can help send the message to your children to be UPSTANDERS. Upstanders are kids that might witness someone being mean and bravely stand up to it by saying stop, taking the victim with them and walking away, and reporting it to an adult. We want to ensure that EVERY child feels safe, valued, and respected at Jefferson.
