A near-total lunar eclipse occurred over Michigan last night (Thursday night, August 27, into early Friday morning, August 28, 2026), the peak occurred at 12:12 a.m. obscuring 96% of the Moon! Here is my amateur photo of the Moon and links to photos of other Michiganders.

Dear all,

Our summer physics program attracted a record number of participants this year: 36 advanced high school students from 14 high schools! As usual, apart from my lectures on quantum and modern physics, our faculty members give research seminars and lab tours. Below is the group photo in Prof. Litvinenko's lab.

Dear all,

Our final colloquium for the Winter semester will be given by Professor David Garfinkle from our Department of Physics. David will talk about "Cyclic Cosmology", please see the abstract below.

The colloquium will take place in MSC 185 from noon to 1 pm on Thursday, April 16. Please join us for this intriguing talk!

Abstract: One striking feature of the early universe is that the density of matter and energy is almost exactly the same everywhere. The usual explanation for this uniformity is a period of very rapid expansion shortly after the Big Bang. Instead we consider the possibility that the uniformity was produced before the Big Bang, at a time when the universe was contracting.
