Peridot is the green gem variety of olivine. In the United States, large quantities of gem-quality peridot can only be found near San Carlos, Gila County, Arizona. It is found on Peridot Meso on land that belongs to the Apache Ndeh Nation. Those who live in the San Carlos area are known as the San Carlos Nation. Since the land is owned by the Apache Ndeh people, Peridot Mesa is not open to public collecting. The peridot is removed from its basalt matrix using hand tools.
