As we enter this Memorial Day weekend (the unofficial start of Summer) lets pause to remember the real reason for this holiday weekend. We remember those who gave their all so we can be free. Memorial Day is a day to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to make this country a free country. The birthplace of Memorial Day can be traced back to nearby Waterloo, NY that began the tradition of honoring those that made this sacrifice starting soon after the Civil War.
75 years ago, in 1943, as we were in the middle of World War II, 35 Scouts descended onto Camp Babcock-Hovey. Their mission was to plant pine and spruce saplings in honor of living and deceased World War II military men and women. They planted thousands of trees and a "Log" book of the honored were kept in the camp office for years to come. Ultimately 36,282 military personal from New York State made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II. So next time you are in camp, and you are enjoying the shade of a tree that seems to be about 75 years old, remember those that made the ultimate sacrifice for your freedom.
