Renal oncocytomas are benign masses that are frequently indistinguishable from RCC → here are some of the most common features

- Most commonly a well-circumscribed, solid renal mass
may also be poorly marginated

- ⅓ of cases contain a central stellate scar → similar appearance to renal cell carcinoma (RCC)

- Variable echogenicity

- May have increased vascularity on color doppler

An oncocytoma can only be definitively diagnosed by renal biopsy; however, recognizing key sonographic features aids in detection, characterization, and differential diagnosis

Evaluating for endometrial polyps? Here are the most common sonographic features to look for on your next scan!

- Identify a feeding vessel → 95% specific for endometrial polyps

- May be surrounded by endometrial fluid

- Typically hyperechoic to endometrium

- Correlation with clinical symptoms → AUB, PMB, infertility, pelvic pain

- 3D ultrasound may aid in identifying the borders

Looking for an easier way to identify the renal artery origins during a renal duplex?
Try using the banana peel sign🍌

Position your patient in the left lateral decubitus (LLD) position.

Scan the aorta in the coronal plane until you see both renal arteries branching from the aorta

The right renal artery courses toward the transducer (flow toward the probe).

The left renal artery courses away from the transducer (flow away from the probe, typically displayed in blue, depending on your color Doppler settings).
