The Garth Fagan Dance School (GFDS) began teaching children in 1989. GFDS provides weekly dance classes for ages 3-adult.

THAT’S A WRAP! Last week, the Garth Fagan Dance School concluded our annual Summer Movement Institute. Our three-week intensive brought together dancers from across the nation to immerse themselves in Fagan Technique, culture, and history, all while building community and sharing a love of dance.

We are so grateful to RIT for providing these beautiful facilities for us to dance and connect in, and Wegmans Food Markets for providing our lunches.

Thank you to our multitude of guest artists: Talawa Presto, Joel Ramirez, Dr. Joanne Kilgour Dowdy, Amy McDonald, Cloria Sutton,and Sarah Carlton, for sharing your expertise with our students. These classes enrich participants’ training with exposure to new dance techniques and cross-training to support their dancing as a whole.

Finally, thank you to our participants! You brought the energy this year and made undeniable improvements over these three weeks.

✨SMI Week 1

We asked our Summer Movement Institute (SMI) dancers to share their favorite part of Week 1, and their answers say it all. From inspiring guest artists classes and learning company repertory to building community and growing in Fagan Technique, this first week has been filled with learning, creativity, and connection.

As part of our “Meaning in Motion” series, our ensemble students took a masterclass from A Magical Journey Thru Stages focusing on how to practice expression and connecting with our emotions while dancing. This comes a month after A Magical Journey Thru Stages students joined us in our studio to take an intro to Fagan Technique class with our students. It has been so wonderful collaborating with Stages, their team, and their students!

Hi all! Wanted to share that there is still time to sign up for Garth Fagan Dance's Summer Movement Institute (SMI)!

SMI is a three week summer program that offers students an opportunity to study the Fagan Technique, learn choreography by Garth Fagan, study from our professional company, and take cultural field trips around Rochester. Garth Fagan is most famous for choreographing the Lion King on Broadway, but that is just a sliver of the many accomplishments he and his company have achieved. The company has a 55 year legacy here in Rochester.

Details:

Class Schedule:
- July 6th - July 25

- 9:30am - 4:30pm

- Classes Monday - Friday

- Classes are located at RIT but there will be transportation offered to and from downtown and the RIT campus.

- We have two programs running simultaneously. One of teens (12-17) and one for adults (18+)

Classes offered:

-Fagan Technique
-Composition
-Repertory
-Rotating classes in various styles
- Cultural field trips

We believe that dance should be accessible to all, and have many scholarship opportunities available. If the full day of classes is too much, we also allow for folks to just attend morning technique class.
