What does it mean to change healthcare before you've even graduated medical school?

For Kathryn Xu (MED '27), it meant creating a free dermatology clinic for people experiencing homelessness, launching a Skin of Color lecture series to help future physicians better care for diverse patient populations, and advocating for more equitable healthcare access.

Now, her efforts have earned national recognition.

Kathryn is one of just five third-year medical students in the country to receive the Herbert W. Nickens Award from the Association of American Medical Colleges, honoring leadership that advances opportunity in medical education and access to quality healthcare for underserved communities.

Her journey is a powerful reminder that meaningful change often begins with identifying a need and taking action.

Sometimes, removing a barrier to care means looking beyond the hospital room.

When Mayo Clinic hematologist and Mayo Clinic alum, Nora Bennani, M.D., discovered that one patient was considering leaving the hospital because no one could care for her two dogs and cat, she knew there had to be a better way.

That experience inspired Sunny's Helping Paws, a nonprofit providing loving, temporary care for patients’ pets while they receive medical treatment.

From a service dog needing a safe place during hospitalization to pets staying with trained guardians during weeks of cancer treatment, the program recognizes something deeply important: pets are part of the family, and caring for the whole person sometimes means caring for the animals they love, too. 🐾

On September 11, the Mayo Fellows' Association hosted its Second Annual MFA 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at the Gonda Building's North Stairs.

Mayo Clinic residents, fellows, and friends climbed 2,200 stairs — 110 stories — matching the climb first responders made at the World Trade Center. Several participants carried a 40-pound ruck to honor the weight those responders bore.

Each step remembered the courage and sacrifice of those who ran toward danger to help others. We never forget.

Mayo Clinic is helping to lead efforts to develop next-generation gene-editing therapies for children with rare immune diseases through the AEGIS project, supported by an ARPA-H award of up to $27.7 million. The initiative aims to make precision genetic medicine more accessible and create new possibilities for young patients who currently have limited treatment options.

What does it mean to truly feel at home?

For Dr. Nneka I. Comfere, that feeling began when she walked through the doors of Mayo Clinic as a medical student in 1997.

Her story spans continents, careers and generations of learners—from growing up in Nigeria and discovering a passion for science, to becoming a Mayo physician and educator, and now serving as the new Juanita Kious Waugh Executive Dean of Education and dean of the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine.

Along the way, she has been guided by values that have remained constant: compassion, integrity, teamwork, innovation, and putting patients' needs first.
