Today juniors and seniors attended the HERO program. This is an hour long presentation on the dangers of Substance Use and Overdose. The program outlines the progression of addiction, consequences of use, and the impact on family members; while highlighting that support and recovery is possible.
The program follows βCharlieβ through his use of alcohol, ma*****na, prescription pain medications, as well as he**in, which ultimately cost him his life. In addition to the dangers of op**te use, connections can be made to other substances of abuse that could also result in overdose.
The mental health team was available for scholars who may have had difficulty with the subject matter. Scholars watched a dramatic reenactment of a parent finding their child had overdosed and calling for emergency services to help.

Odyssey Capstone students presented to the board on May 26th about the benefits of this AP program, which is being piloted at Odyssey Academy. Mr. Austin and Mr. Perry gave an overview of their classes and discussed what the students need to be able to produce by the end of the two courses. Seminar students (11th grade) Daydrea and Bella presented how the course taught them to think differently and how to present in a meaningful way. AP research student Silas discussed the benefits of learning to use different types of research tools and how it was interesting to choose his own question. He then presented the board with his 15 page Research paper. Finally, Odyssey grads Willa and Katie (both currently in college) discussed how the program set them up for success for the rigors of college and how the Capstone program put them above other college peers in regards to research, writing longer essays, and running their own data analysis labs. It was a very successful night, and the Odyssey students did an excellent job showcasing the Capstone program at Odyssey.
