Creating a more transparent, democratic union with increased communication and member participation! Voting takes place via email April 21 - May 8.

ROC Teachers in Action believe in creating a more transparent and democratic union with increased communication and member participation. We want to connect union decision-making to the classrooms and increase mental health staff and resources for our students. We believe in clear and fair contractual language that recruits and retains qualified staff (which includes substitute teachers), all the while engaging community allies as partners.

Dear Supporters,

The historic ROC Teachers in Action! campaign and the RTA election have come to a close.

Our slate of 22 candidates visited schools, talked 1:1 with members, held events, printed and distributed flyers and posters to schools, fundraised ($4490), hosted Town Hall Zoom meetings, appeared in local news media, and sent countless emails and texts to remind members to vote.

We ran an incredibly strong campaign in an organization that hasn’t seen leadership change in decades. We ran for positions that have been unfilled for years. We activated members who had rarely or never voted in an RTA election before. We educated members about our union’s structures and procedures. Most importantly, we increased democratic participation and drove the largest voter turnout in over 20 years!

We achieved these platform goals by modeling transparency, effective communication, and driving member participation. We believe a more democratic RTA is possible, and your support, votes, and encouragement are proof! While we hoped for more wins, the numbers tell a compelling story–that a large portion of RTA members are ready for change.

What’s next? ROC TiA will continue to organize, communicate with members, run for more building level positions, and plan for elections in 2025! We won’t give up, and we won’t go away.

Thank you for your support, from the bottom of our hearts.

In Solidarity,

ROC TiA

We greatly appreciate the help with spreading the word about our slate, motivating members to vote, the financial contributions for printing materials, welcoming us to your schools, and keeping us encouraged and focused throughout this campaign process. More updates to come as the upcoming week unfolds!

Polls are open until 11:59 PM tonight!!!
Check your email for the ballot which was hopefully sent to your personal email on 4/21 from “RTA Election Coordinator” “[email protected]”.

The final hour of voting. It closes at 5pm. We were still talking to members today that didn’t know an election was going on or forgot! Please take a couple minutes and send out a text reminder to your fellow RTA members to vote!

05/07/2023

Last election there was 21% turnout. Encourage your colleagues to vote and let’s break 50% this time around! Votes need to be in by 5:00 p.m. on 5/8. Some members did not get ballots and some don’t know an election is happening, so the reminders are important!

Email [email protected] IMMEDIATELY if you don’t have a ballot and remind colleagues to do the same. (Check your personal email and your spam folder.)

Stood in the sunshine for a bit this morning at school 35 and had a brief but powerful conversation with a colleague who I hadn’t seen in a while.
My favorite thing about this campaign (which ends Monday) is having 1:1 conversations and talking about member participation. I’m proud to help people get involved in our union.

Mission: Ask 5-10 colleagues “Did you get a ballot for RTA elections in your personal email? Did you hear about the ROC Teachers in Action! Slate?”
