Rochester is filled with talented people who know our neighborhoods, understand our families, and care deeply about our children. We see that as an asset. Building a workforce that draws from and reflects the community we serve strengthens our schools and creates meaningful opportunities for Rochester residents to contribute to student success.

The suggestion that inviting members of the Rochester community to apply for positions somehow raises questions about the safety of children is deeply troubling. RCSD follows established hiring, screening, and background check requirements for all employees. Recruiting from our community does not mean lowering standards. It means recognizing the talent, experience, commitment, and potential that already exist throughout Rochester.

Our parents, caregivers, and other community members should not be viewed with suspicion simply because we are intentionally inviting them into our workforce. Rochester residents have long played an essential role in educating, mentoring, and caring for this city’s children. Our community is not a threat to our children. It is one of their greatest sources of strength.

For an urban school district, building a workforce that draws from, understands, and reflects the community it serves is not something that requires an apology or defense. It is something we should all be working toward.

Like school districts across New York State and the nation, RCSD continues to recruit qualified candidates for positions to address staffing shortages. Supporting and retaining our current employees while recruiting additional talent are not competing priorities. Both are essential to meeting the needs of students.

We deeply value the employees who serve RCSD students every day. Their experience and commitment are essential to our success. At the same time, responsible leadership requires us to continually build the workforce our students and schools need.

Our responsibility is to Rochester’s students and families, and we will not be distracted from our work of serving our children. We implore our community to join us in this work.
