Voices, Rochester’s professional vocal ensemble, will present "Brahms and Beyond: An Evening of Romantic Song" on Friday, October 7 at 7:30 pm at Asbury First United Methodist Church, 1040 East Avenue. The evening will consist of vocal chamber music and choruses by Johannes Brahms, Clara and Robert Schumann, and Heinrich von Herzogenberg. The pianist will be Jeremy Vigil, and the conductor will be Voices Music Director William Weinert. The concert is free and open to the public. There will be a freewill offering.
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) is well-known for the subtlety, imagination, and beauty of his writing for voices. Like many of his contemporaries, he often set poems of the Romantic era centered on love, nature, and the seasons. His career was launched through the enthusiasm of the composers Robert and Clara Schumann, and he remained a close friend of Clara Schumann for many years. Herzogenberg, another close friend of Brahms, was influenced by both Brahms and the Schumanns.
Voices is a professional vocal ensemble consisting of Western New York’s finest solo and ensemble singers. They have appeared frequently in concerts and broadcasts since 2007, singing music from the Renaissance through the 21st century. Recent performances have included the "Mass in B-minor" and the "St. John Passion" of J. S. Bach
