Remarks by President Basu: I want to congratulate Puerto Rican Student Organization President-Elect Pamela Álvarez, and I wish her the very best in this new endeavor. I know that she has both the capacity and drive to propel our newly-formed organization to new heights. My advice to the President-Elect; dream with ambition and lead with conviction. President-Elect Álvarez Rosario can count on my full support as she continues my work and implements initiatives in this new chapter of our beloved organization.

Today we celebrate the birth of our cultural identity: the product of the encounter and fusion between the indigenous peoples of America, Africans and the Spanish conquerors in 1492. We celebrate our diverse roots. ¡Que viva nuestra raza!

“¡NI UNA MENOS!” ( not one more girl missing ) shouts our island who is facing a crisis of gender violence since the start of the year. In 2020 alone, 21 women have gone missing ( only 2 have been found) and 30 other women were kidnapped and killed. We the people, are upset about the government’s poor response to this matter. As they fail to acknowledge the femicides and fail to defend women correctly. The Puerto Rican Student Organization joins our fellow citizens in this fight for an equitable response to this matter. Together we are one. ✊🏽

Three years ago today, Hurricane María made landfall in Puerto Rico. This Category 4 hurricane caused catastrophic damage to the island’s infrastructure, keeping millions of citizens without basic necessities, like electricity and water, for months. Hurricane María was for many a turning point in their lives, making the event unforgettable. Apart from reflecting on the experiences we lived through, we commemorate the Puerto Ricans whom we lost too🖤. #4,645
