The workshop theme is “Resources to Build Your Workforce.” and my presentation will explore 2 important questions:
▪️ What Assistive Technologies can benefit the individual with a disability?

Parents, if your child is struggling with reading, writing, and communicating, there is help. I encourage you to talk with school counselors about the various options available for your child. Do not be afraid to ask about “assistive technology.” It is possible to have computers read out loud and even convert speech to text. There is so much more that assistive technology can do for students. Such technology can put your child on a level playing field with other students. The future is bright. As an assistive technology specialist and actual end user of this technology, I have experience with how it can make a difference in a person’s life. Education and independence shouldn’t have barriers. There is hope. Happy holidays!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends. It is now crunch time for college students. The end of the current semester is just a few weeks away. If you are having trouble with reading, writing, and communication tasks, please seek out assistance immediately. Go to your counseling center or Disability Services to set up time with tutors. You should also schedule time to use the assistive technology to assist you with studies. A vocational rehabilitation counselor from ACCES-VR or from some other agency is an excellent person who can help you also. If you are having a difficult time using assistive technology, please get help. As an assistive technology specialist and an actual end user, I understand how this type of technology can help you achieve your goals. Don’t be afraid to reach out for assistance. Good luck! I hope you have a great semester.

The end of the current college semester is fast approaching. If you are struggling with your studies, it is important that you seek out assistance well in advance prior to finals week. If you don’t have the appropriate assistive technology to help you with these tasks, I encourage you to visit the counseling center for assistance. You may also want to consider visiting the office for Disability Services on campus. This office is usually a part of the counseling center. Staff members can help you schedule time to use assistive technology that can help you complete your assignments efficiently. Such technology can put you on a level playing field with all your classmates. Do not hesitate!

This is an important message for college students who have a disability. Midterm exams are fast approaching. If you have difficulty with the learning process, please make sure you get to “Disability Services” to register for assistance. When you have completed that process, make sure you schedule time to take advantage of the services the office provides. For the upcoming midterm exams, your office may provide testing accommodations for you. Such accommodations may include tests read out loud and a proctored exam in a private room. If you need to use assistive technology, you may need to schedule time in their office to use it. Do not wait until the last minute to do these tasks.
