Best meeting practices change when the situation changes, as Rich so aptly said in his presentation. The Toastmaster keeps the meeting on schedule and in order, and the Table Topics master challenges our extemporaneous speaking, but topics of discussion could change depending on the meeting theme. To improve your communication and leadership skills, feel free to visit one of our meetings on the second or fourth Thursday of the month from 7 to 8pm CST UHT-6.

In Jean's keynote presentation tonight, she discussed the difference between public relations and other terms such as marketing. Our New Years Resolution Challenge is to better communicate how Toastmasters can sharpen someone's skills (public relations!) and provide an outlet to practice, inviting new members in. Our public relations-themed club is learning together as we go: virtual guests are welcome, our next three meetings are posted below.
Are you interested in gaining PR skills? Are you available on Jan. 11 or 25?

How will you utilize the PR skills you will gain in our PR club?
Did you know the 'sandwich evaluation method' was invented by Mary Kay Ash of Mary Kay Cosmetics? And that the purpose of the 'Sandwich Evaluation Method' was designed for new managers and leaders with new employees who have never given or received evaluations a way to relieve their own stress when giving an evaluation. Seasoned managers and leaders giving evaluations to seasoned employees were instructed not to use the sandwich method for the following 3 reasons:
1) Praise substantially obscures the criticism or suggestions for improvement - either give praise or improvements - not both.
2) Praise is often interpreted as trivial or just-for-the-sake of it to soften the suggestions for improvement.
3) People get tuned into the praise-suggestion-praise pattern, but tend to only focus on the last statements - the praise - eventually forgetting about the suggestions in the middle.
whether you use the sandwich method or another method, any praise and suggestion should be explained WHY you are praising or suggesting and improvement.
Simply saying, "You liked the opening", or "I suggest you use more voice variety" does not provide any value without explaining WHY, according to Mary Kay Ash.

Tonight Division F Director Georgette visited our meeting. Toastmasters are always expanding their skill set, knowing good communication requires more than just public speaking finese.
Our next virtual meeting is scheduled for Thursday November 10th from 7 to 8pm and our Keynote speaker will be Celeste with an “Empathy in PR” theme. Any and all are welcome to join us. If you're reading this post, that includes you!

There is a saying, when the student is ready the teacher appears. If the Elders sense that you are ready, they will help you see and learn new things. Most human beings love to share what they know with people who are excited to listen. If you are talking to someone and you feel they really aren't listening, you won't want to tell them much. Before you go talk to the Elders, examine your motives - are you really excited about listening to them?
Perhaps in preparing for our Toastmasters’ meetings, we too should become excited about listening and receiving the messages of the speakers.
