A very large percentage of books for kids are published as a series.
The books I read as a kid were almost all stand-alone books.

I wonder if things changed because publishers and authors realized that we all produced a series in our heads, anyway--in our imaginations, in what we played--whether or not the stories were written down.

How many volumes of Tom Sawyer adventures could be written just based on what me and my brothers did in and around Bear Creek.

Anyone else?

The summer that started when I was 11, I read "Tom Sawyer" for the first time. And I read a pirate adventure called "The Ghost in the Noonday Sun" and Edwin Corebtt's book on paleontology, "One Million Years Ago." And I read, most surprisingly, "The Hobbit" for the first of many times

I read other books that summer, but those stick out. I suppose there are some pretty specific reasons they do.

I wonder what everyone else read--the summer you were 11?
And why you remember it.

The best colleges and businesses clamor for people who are continuously learning how to learn.

Every four-year-old does this. The best education for your child, then, will be oriented toward freeing them to do so again.
