We think you should be able to see the whole receipt, so here it is. Professional trainer hours: $2,500 — half the total, and the part nobody can volunteer their way around. Rescue dog acquisition: $475. Food, housing and daily care through twelve to eighteen months of training: $475. Spay, neuter and microchip: $475. Veterinary care and vaccinations: $375. Gear — vest, leash, ID: $250. Family placement, matching and follow-up support: $250. Certification testing: $200. That is $5,000, and it is one dog, one family, for the rest of that dog's working life.

Where the $5,000 per dog goes. No mystery, here is the whole thing:

Professional trainer hours: $2,500. Rescue fee: $475. Foster and daily care: $475. Spay/neuter and microchip: $475. Veterinary: $375. Gear and equipment: $250. Placement and follow-up support: $250. Certification: $200.

Half of it is trainer time, because that is what actually makes a working dog.

A child who stumbles over a word in front of the class will read that same page to a dog without hesitating once. The reason is simple and worth understanding: reading aloud badly is socially risky, and a dog removes the risk entirely. It does not correct, sigh, or look at the clock. What is left is a child practicing out loud, which is the only thing that actually builds fluency. You do not need a therapy dog for this. Your own dog will do. Ten minutes, a book the child picked, and no corrections from you either.

It means another school year where the mornings are a fight. Another winter of leaving the house braced. Another round of “we are doing everything we can” that is true and still not enough.

It means a parent who has already researched this thoroughly, found the answer, and cannot reach it.

Each furry therapist costs $5,000, so we're throwing the “with LOVE” Gala to fetch $30,000 for six of these tail-wagging heroes. Six days a week this page talks about the work — who we visit, what we train, what it costs, and what it is for. Sunday is the day we stop and say thank you. To the handlers, the dogs, the staff who let us in the door, the people who give, and the ones who simply read these posts and pass them on. None of this runs on its own. It runs because a fairly large number of people quietly decided it should.

If you want to see how it works up close, the first Saturday of the month at the DogHouse is the easiest way in.
