Each week we will be highlighting one of our Photo Science Seniors. This week we are highlighting Charlie Lerch.

I enjoyed the diversity of the Photographic Sciences program. When I came to RIT I had no idea what I wanted to do. Through the Photographic Sciences program, I discovered the wonderful world of imaging and all it had to offer. Through this program, I have worked with imaging systems of all kinds, from high-speed to film scanning to multispectral. I will be continuing my education with a master’s in Color Science this coming year. I am currently looking for an internship.

Our final SPAS Honors Show highlight, photographed by now alumni Leanna Herrick. This microphotograph is taken using a polarizing microscope with the addition of a quartz wedge!

Visit the Ron Francis Lab in Gannett 7B-2182 between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm to experience this year’s Photographic Science senior interactive capstone project: Thermal Threat Detector. The system uses 180-degree field of view thermal imaging system and is able to detect threats from a room away! See innovation in action!

Happy microscopy Monday ! A student from the photomicrography course last spring, was just announced as an honorable mention in the Nikon small world competition!

Travis states: “This is a photo of sphagnum moss captured with an Olympus bx40 microscope set up for fluorescence. The sample is prepared on a slide with a cover slip, which trapped a few bubbles on the specimen. The camera used was a Canon EOS r5 on a copy stand above the scope in the high mag lab. The image is a focus stack of 25 images, stitched together with Helicon Focus. The objective magnification is 20x. There is little to no retouching besides the parameter adjustment for the focus stack.”
